Seeing outbreaks on lettuce but not on kale and other brassica vegetables like broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, collard greens and others, researchers analysed the tendencies of leafy greens to get infected with E. coli, or Escherichia coli, a bacterium species found in lower intestines of humans. While generally harmless, some of its strains are occasionally responsible for food contaminations and can cause food poisoning. The researchers at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, US, infected whole leaves from five leafy greens — romaine lettuce, green-leaf lettuce, spinach, kale, and collards — with E. coli (serotype O157:H7) and observed what happened after storing them under these temperatures — 4 degrees Celsius (refrigeration), 20 degrees Celsius (room temperature) and 37 degrees Celsius (normal body temperature). Overall, a combination of both temperature and leaf surface properties such as roughness and the natural wax coating were found to govern susceptibility to the bacterial contamination, the researchers found.

GDP growth print for 3Q contrasts the grim reality of household consumption and income situation. The study, published in the journal Cell Genomics, reveals that prostate cancer, which affects one in eight men in their lifetime, includes two different subtypes termed evotypes. The findings, led by researchers at the University of Oxford, and the University of Manchester, UK, could help provide tailored treatments to each individual patient according to a genetic test which will also be delivered using AI, they said. «Our research demonstrates that prostate tumours evolve along multiple pathways, leading to two distinct disease types,» said lead researcher Dan Woodcock, from the University of Oxford.

Covid vaccine is not responsible for heart attacks, Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said today citing a study done by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). While speaking at ANI Dialogues 2024-Navigating India's Health Sector, Mandaviya said, «If someone has a stroke today, they think it is because of the Covid vaccine. ICMR has done a detailed study that the (Covid) vaccine is not responsible for heart attacks.» He added, «There are multiple reasons for heart attacks, like our lifestyle, tobacco and liquor consumption… Sometimes, misinformation goes among the people and a perception is formed for some time… But whatever decision we make, it should be data-based and scientific research-based.»
