Man-made products - buildings, plastics - could be storing 8.4 bn tonnes of carbon, study estimates
carbon is estimated to have been accumulated and stored in long-lasting products from around the world made by humans, such as plastics and buildings, between 1995 and 2019, according to a study. Researchers at the University of Groningen in the Netherlands said this 'fossil carbon' added to the 'technosphere' — the sum of all human-made objects, both in use and discarded — equals around 93 per cent of carbon dioxide emissions from around the world in 2019. They added that the carbon locked up in the 'technosphere' has a huge potential to add to greenhouse gas emissions. Increasing the lifetime of products and recycling rates are two ways to reduce the amount of fossil carbon entering waste streams, the researchers suggested.

US nuclear expansion unlikely to deter China: Study
Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has revealed that increasing US nuclear capabilities would not deter China from employing atomic weapons in a conflict over Taiwan, Taipei Times reported. The findings, published in a report on Friday, challenge current calls among policy experts to expand and modernise the US nuclear arsenal in response to China's growing military strength. The table top exercise, described as the first large-scale unclassified simulation of a potential nuclear war over Taiwan, explored scenarios where nuclear weapons might be used. According to the report, the US's nuclear capabilities, beyond ongoing modernisation efforts, had minimal impact on Beijing's willingness to deploy nuclear arms. Instead, the exercise highlighted the conditions under which either side might face pressure to resort to nuclear strikes, rather than the likelihood of such weapons being used.

5000 years old mystery solved: This is what scientists are saying about the origins of Britain's iconic Stonehenge
5,000-year-old marvel, have puzzled researchers. Now, new research from University College London and Aberystwyth University sheds new light on its purpose and the origins of its stones. According to the research, the massive stones of Stonehenge were sourced from far-reaching corners of Britain, including southwest Wales and northeast Scotland. This effort wasn’t just architectural but symbolic. Communities from these regions are believed to have transported their local stones to Wiltshire as a gesture of unity. Lead author Professor Mike Parker Pearson stated, “[Stonehenge was] a monument of unification for the peoples of Britain, celebrating their eternal links with their ancestors and the cosmos.” The study emphasizes the collaborative effort to create a shared identity across ancient Britain.

Bombshell report: U.S government knew Wuhan lab leak was responsible for Covid, but deliberately downplayed it
Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV) and EcoHealth Alliance. This effort aimed to collect and study 500,000 unknown viruses with the potential to infect humans, costing an estimated $3 billion. The project, co-led by EcoHealth's Peter Daszak and Wuhan’s Shi Zhengli, proceeded despite biosafety concerns and warnings about national security risks. New documents obtained by US Right to Know (USRTK) highlight these concerns just months before the Covid-19 outbreak. The Global Virome Project aimed to identify and experiment with 99% of undiscovered viruses that could jump from animals to humans. Supported by USAID and the US State Department from 2016 to 2019, the project also involved China’s Academy of Military Medical Sciences and Beijing Genomics Institute (BGI), a company later blacklisted by the Pentagon. The initiative faced scrutiny over transparency, data ownership, and potential national security threats, as the US and Chinese governments were warned about each other’s involvement. Reliance Industries shares in focus as oil swap with Venezuela resumes under U.S. license
Reliance Industries shares will remain in focus on Friday after Venezuela's state oil company PDVSA and Reliance Industries resumed an oil swap arrangement that was previously halted due to U.S. sanctions. This development follows a U.S. license granted in July authorizing such trade, according to an internal PDVSA document. A supertanker carrying about 1.9 million barrels of Venezuelan Merey heavy crude departed earlier this month for India's Sikka port, while a unit of Reliance delivered a 500,000-barrel cargo of heavy naphtha to PDVSA this month in exchange, according to the document.
