Papua New Guinea government says Friday's landslide buried 2,000 people and formally asks for help
United Nations resident coordinator dated Sunday, the acting director of the South Pacific island nation’s National Disaster Center said the landslide “buried more than 2000 people alive" and caused “major destruction."Estimates of the casualties have varied widely since the disaster occurred, and it was not immediately clear how officials arrived the number of people affected.Australia prepared on Monday to send aircraft and other equipment to help at the site of a deadly landslide in Papua New Guinea as overnight rains in the South Pacific nation’s mountainous interior raised fears that the tons of rubble that buried hundreds of villagers could become dangerously unstable.Australian Defense Minister Richard Marles said his officials have been talking with their Papua New Guinea counterparts since Friday, when a mountainside collapsed on Yambali village in Enga province, which the United Nations estimates killed 670 people. The remains of only six people had been recovered so far.“The exact nature of the support that we do provide will play out over the coming days," Marles told Australian Broadcasting Corp.“We’ve got obviously airlift capacity to get people there.

Lesson for entrepreneurs: What are the common mistakes startup founders make and how to avoid them?
To add to these harrowing odds, last year was particularly harsh for this merry brigade of rainbow chasers. After a surge in 2021-22, the funding winter in 2023 saw a 72% decline in funding, with only two startups (InCred Finance, Zepto) achieving the unicorn status, compared to 21 and 45 in the previous two years. Yet, many see it as a blip in the overall startup scape. A recent KPMG report claims that venture capital investment in India doubled sequentially in the March 2024 quarter, to reach $3.2 billion across 354 deals, surpassing the global market. India also has the third largest startup ecosystem in the world, with 1.17 lakh entities (DPIIT), nearly 1,710 venture capital funds, 794 accelerators and incubators (Tracxn), and several government initiatives like Startup India. 80% of startups fail in first 5 years Reasons for failure Why do startups fail?

Startup funding: What do investors look for in a startup?
Q. How much will I get back and when? Viable business model: The bottom line for any investor is return on investment. So he wants to know how soon and how much profit you can earn, and if you have a clear path and plan of achieving it. He wants a sharply focused business model, with realistic projections and estimates for revenue generation and profitability. Q. Can you grow in a sustained manner? Scalability & traction: No one wants to invest in a business that loses steam after the initial burst of profit and proof of viability. Investors want to see growth projection plans, and ability to continue and increase the momentum over the long term.

Greater transparency: No indemnity clause in NPA sale pact between banks and ARCs
banks and stressed asset firms last week adopted a 'model agreement' for selling loans, but were unable to reach a meeting point on the tricky issue of 'indemnity' which banks typically refuse to give once sticky assets move out of their books. Lenders, according to documents reviewed by ET, would also have the right to declare an account as 'fraud' and make asset reconstruction companies (ARCs) that acquired the stressed loan responsible for dealing with the investigative agencies looking into the offence. Even though a model template settles several differences arising in the course of loan sales, the two issues, pertaining to indemnity and fraud, place selling banks at a comparatively advantageous position.

Palpable anger among farmers against BJP as Punjab heads to polls
Punjab): As the afternoon sun beats down on the tin shed, about a hundred farmers listen in rapt attention to the old farmer leader on the makeshift stage. «We have the right to ask questions from the government,» the leader is speaking on the stage at Shambhu on Punjab-Haryana border, where farmers were stopped from marching towards Delhi in mid-February. It has been over three months, but the anger is palpable. A small temporary township has come up at Shambhu border toll booth, about 200 km from Delhi and an hour's drive from Chandigarh. Hundreds of tractors and trolleys have been joined together to make small tenements for farmers. As the season changed from a pleasant spring to scorching summer, air coolers have been installed in these tents. The anger against the Modi government is now spilling into elections as all the 13 Lok Sabha constituencies of Punjab vote in the last phase of voting on June 1. «Vote for anyone but BJP — this is our call,» says Balwant Singh, state president Bharatiya Kisan Union (Behramke). Singh says the entire farmers morcha has sent word back to the villages to drive away BJP candidates if they come to campaign.

Mint Primer | Why multiple chatbots are better than one
Mint explains: Systems that rely on more than one chatbot or use multiple Large Language Models (LLMs) are called multi-agent systems (MAS). A chatbot on the website of a bank, auto, insurance, edtech or any other company has improved over the years, thanks to advances in AI and natural language processing. But it still falls short of answering questions that might require more ‘human-like’ capabilities or pulling data from different domains.

Inspiring! This IIT Kanpur graduate left a high-paying job to become a fitness trainer
career change, Priyanka Gupta has shattered all such stereotypes. Gupta, who is a graduate of the prestigious Indian Institute Of Technology Kanpur shocked the world, by making a bold career move — she left her job at a big MNC to pursue her dream of being a fitness coach. Her LinkedIn post went viral. In the post she talked about the difficult decision she took and how, despite tasting failure on her first startup, she decided to persevere. «I left a big MNC and my IIT pedigree attachment. Now, I help professionals stay fit and live longer. Like many of my fellow IIT buddies, right after graduation, I started chasing that golden ticket to financial stability. I was responsible for supporting my family and this was the most apparent path. After 5 years, when I took my first break from work, I got bugged by entrepreneurship. Don't know how. I wanted to start a home-cooked food delivery business. It didn't start. I could not get enough courage. And got dragged into 9-to-5 again,» she wrote.

Sometimes U.S. and U.K. politics seem in lockstep. Not this year.
United States follows with a momentous presidential election a few months later. It happened in 2016, when Britons voted for Brexit and Americans elected Donald Trump, and now it's happening again. Political soothsayers might be tempted to study the results of Britain's July 4 general election for clues about how the United States might vote on Nov. 5. In 2016, after all, the country's shock vote to leave the European Union came to be seen as a canary in the coal mine for Trump's surprise victory later that year.
