Passengers of Alaska Airlines flight that suffered mid-air emergency on Jan 5 may be 'crime victims', says FBI
FBI...A criminal investigation can be a lengthy undertaking, and, for several reasons, we cannot tell you about its progress at this time." After relatives of 346 people who were killed in two Boeing Max 8 crashes in 2018 and 2019 said that their legal rights have been violated, the US Justice Department in 2022 updated its guidelines for notifying victims of potential crimes. In 2021, the relatives said that their rights were violated when the department deferred a prosecution deal with Boeing without notifying them. The US Justice Department later apologized for not meeting with relatives of the crash victims before the announcement of the deal.

Bengal Governor asserts no interference on his part in LS poll process
Governor C V Ananda Bose on Saturday asserted that there would be no interference on his part in the Lok Sabha poll process, a day after the TMC accused him of meddling in it. Bose said that any political party has every right to complain against any action taken by any functionary, including the governor, stating that he respects that freedom. «There will be no interference by the governor in the election process,» he said while speaking at a function here. The Trinamool Congress (TMC) had on Friday filed a complaint with the Election Commission (EC) against Bose, accusing him of unlawfully meddling in the Lok Sabha poll process and trying to run a parallel office similar to the EC.

Intention behind electoral bonds scheme was good: Gadkari; says no party can survive sans funds
Nitin Gadkari has said it was not possible to run a political party without funds, and added that the Centre had introduced the electoral bonds scheme, now struck down as unconstitutional by the Supreme Court, in 2017 with a «good intention». The senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader said all political parties need to sit together and deliberate if the Supreme Court gives any further direction on the matter. He made the comments at an event organised by a media house in GIFT City near Gandhinagar on Friday. «When Arun Jaitely was (Union finance) minister, I was part of that discussion (regarding electoral bonds). No party can survive without resources. In some countries, governments fund political parties. There is no such system in India. Thus, we chose this system of financing political parties,» said Gadkari on a question about electoral bonds.

More bosses want employees back in the office. Like, now
work from home (WFH) to championing work from office (WFO). Still, experts said once the dust settles, companies are likely to agree on a spectrum of working models from fully remote to hybrid to being in office. But right now, employers want to ensure that people actually show up in office, a push that's backed by changes in the job market. It's becoming an employers' market, said Arvind Usretay, senior director, commercial leader, India and South Asia, Mercer.

Plan to reward patent, IPR creation in technical textiles in the works
copyrights, trademarks and patents in technical textiles, which are meant for non-aesthetic purposes. The textiles ministry has proposed 10 years of exclusive rights for the industry to commercialise the intellectual property (IP) if their funding contribution is at least 50% in projects funded under the National Technical Textiles Mission (NTTM). Similarly, the industry would get exclusive rights for two years for contributing at least 10% in the projects. As per the draft rules, the IP of the research outcome will generally vest with the host institution on behalf of the ministry. For all Indian patents, the government will have march-in rights, including the option of compulsory licence, in case of any exigency arising for the patent and technology to protect the interest of public, it said. The ministry has sanctioned 137 projects valuing around ?474 crore under the NTTM.

Why are women both sadder and happier than men?
I have a good job, a loving husband, healthy kids and a comfortable home. I came late to it all and I sometimes can’t believe my luck: that the sleep-warm little bodies I help dress in the morning are my own children, that the man in my bed at night helped me make them. But the clichés about motherhood and aging and that ever-elusive work-life balance did not quite prepare me for the clichés of my life.

Rushdie over AI, for the time being
Salman Rushdie weighing in on AI's capability to write quality fiction is like Garry Kasparov sharing his views on the technology's ability to play chess — which the grandmaster did with fury after being beaten by IBM supercomputer Deep Blue in 1997: it wasn't the machine that was great, but he who had cracked under pressure. Rushdie's take this week in an article for a French literary journal was more measured, but equally derisive. Testing OpenAI's ChatGPT, the veritable writer described the LLM having 'no originality' and 'completely devoid of any sense of humour', a key yardstick of quality in 'serious' literature. While a Rushdie-ChatGPT contest is not the same as a Kasparov-Deep Blue one — no one wins or loses in something as subjective as literature — the writer is both right and wrong.
