Indian market to emerge as a safe haven amidst EM turbulence, says Geoff Dennis
«Korea has been a very weak market this year. It is down about 19% in dollar terms within the EM index and so this is just more pain for the Korean market and we will have to see how the politics plays out,» says Geoff Dennis, Independent EM Commentator. This morning we have woken up to those kind of news coming in from South Korea wherein, of course, there was that Martian law that was put on, then it was taken off. Now, there is news of impeachment, a lot going on as far as the Extraordinary General Meeting of the Central Bank in South Korea is concerned. But it begs the question whether India is one of those safe havens of sort where there is political stability, where there is economic stability, while even countries like, of course, China, South Korea, West Asia, and all of that are going through their own turmoil. Does that make India stand out as one of the best opportunities right now? Geoff Dennis: Oh, yes, it does.

South Korea shocker: US treasuries, US$, Yen, gold and crypto will be rallying today: Ajay Bagga
Ajay Bagga, Market Expert, says he is expecting cryptos and gold to go up. There will be a flight to safety. Both the yen and the dollar will get bought into. In US treasuries, one can expect the yields to go down. Today we saw French yields reaching the Greece yield levels. We are seeing China borrowing at cheaper rates than Japan. We are expecting the Bank of Japan to come in and raise rates at its next meeting in the next fortnight. Following the political developments in South Korea and martial laws being put in place and then revoked, the Samsung stock is under heavy selling pressure. How do you expect global investors to react in the short term? Could this spark a broader risk aversion in emerging markets? Ajay Bagga: The Korean exchange has said they will function as normal. The party leader of the president has opposed this on a Facebook post and the defence minister has called for the military. So, we really do not know what is happening right now. It actually came out of the blue. There have been political wranglings on the budget and this is a minority government which would not survive a floor test. So, overall, it is a very big surprise and I am sure the allies of South Korea from Japan to Europe are working on the back channels to see how this situation can be diffused. It is not a dictatorial country. It is a very strong democracy standing up to its communist neighbours. So, it is very critical that democracy is protected.

Cement sector may outperform; what to sell, add and hold: Girija Shankar Ray
Girija Shankar Ray, Vice President Equity Research, Yes Securities, says among top picks within the cement sector, ACC can be recommended. The second one is Shree Cement. These two companies are going to do well, even though there is trouble in the industry right now. A lot of cost initiative programmes are going to happen. But for UltraTech and Ambuja, valuations are higher and for Ambuja, whatever acquisitions they have done, it is going to ultimately benefit ACC. So, ACC is his top pick. Ambuja will have a sell rating, as will UltraTech because it has very high valuations. One can add Birla Corp, Dalmia in their portfolio. There are reports doing rounds that there has been a price hike of almost Rs 10 to Rs 30 taken in December so far. What are your channel checks suggesting? Is that something that you are picking up as well? Girija Shankar Ray: So, yes, in November, a price hike was what the Street and the dealers and distributors were expecting for cement, but there was no price hike. In fact, in October and November, on a month-on-month basis, the prices are flattish. The prices are five years below the line right now. And the major impact was in southern regions. In the north and eastern regions, prices are more or less stable. In the other three regions, the prices have actually declined. There was a sharp correction. I believe the prices have bottomed out.

Bangladesh interim govt has absolute obligation to protect its Hindu minority: US Congressman
Bangladesh organised a rally at the White house demanding release of Chinmaya Das and protection for Hindus of Bangladesh. «Bangladesh's interim government has an absolute obligation to protect its Hindu minority and meaningfully address the protests of thousands of minority Hindus in outcry over the recent wave of attacks and harassment,» Congressman Brad Sherman said in a statement. «With the calls for an investigation from the Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council and the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk for killings and other rights violations during the violent unrest leading up to and after the fall of Bangladesh's former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the current administration must demonstrate leadership in eliminating acts of violence against the Hindu community,» Sherman said.

Resolution urging withdrawal of Waqf (Amendment) Bill passed in West Bengal assembly
West Bengal Assembly on Tuesday, even as BJP legislators staged a walkout opposing it. The resolution, moved by Minister Sovandeb Chattopadhyay, claimed that the bill, if passed, will affect the Waqf administration in the country and as such, extreme caution and due diligence are needed before any such drastic change is affected in the existing law. BJP members staged a walkout from the House during discussion on the resolution. Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari said the resolution was a waste of precious time of the House as a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) has been formed to examine the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, and that its term was recently extended till the last day of the budget session of Parliament in 2025.

Budaun mosque dispute: Court asks Muslim side to complete arguments on December 10
Jama Masjid Shamsi here claiming it was a temple, on Tuesday asked the Muslim side to complete their arguments by December 10. Arguing his case, the lawyer for Shamsi Shahi Jama Masjid Intezamia Committee and Waqf Board Asrar Ahmed questioned the locus standi of the Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha to file the petition in the matter. Urging the court to dismiss the plea, the counsel submitted that the mosque is about 850 years old. He stated that there is «no existence of a temple» there and worship by Hindus had never been conducted in the mosque in the past. He argued that the Hindu outfit does not have the legal right to become a plaintiff in the matter. Ahmed also said that filing such a petition in the court violates the Places of Worship Act, 1991.

France's government looks on the brink of collapse. What's next?
Michel Barnier's Cabinet. A no-confidence vote is scheduled Wednesday at parliament in the wake of a divisive budget debate, with a great chance of being successful. If the motion passes, Barnier's Cabinet would be the shortest-lived government in France's modern history, marking an unprecedented period of political instability.

When AI meets cloud ERP: Driving the digital shift in India’s automotive manufacturing
“I was pretty dismayed by the IT being deployed in this industry. It was minimal a decade back,” said Vinnie Mehta, General Secretary of the Automotive Components Manufacturing Association of India (ACMA). “Then came the pandemic, and the entire industry transformed itself, and that was something wonderful to have happened,” Mehta added. Mehta said that everyone jumped onto the IT bandwagon in the industry almost overnight, to the point that ERP systems have now become integral to managing the entire value chain. “It is only fitting, given the fact that the whole automotive value chain contributes to around 7% of India’s GDP, and the auto component industry is half of that. Today, it is hard to envisage a manufacturing value chain without the ERP systems,” he said.
