Top US vaccine official busts RKF Jr's 'lies, misinformation' in resignation letter after being forced to quit
Dr. Peter Marks sent a letter to Acting FDA Commissioner Sara Brenner on Friday saying that he would resign and retire by April 5 as director of the Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research. In his letter, obtained by The Associated Press, Marks said he was “willing to work” to address the concerns expressed by Robert F. Kennedy Jr. about the safety of vaccinations. But he concluded that wasn’t possible. “It has become clear that truth and transparency are not desired by the Secretary, but rather he wishes subservient confirmation of his misinformation and lies,” he wrote. Canada PM Carney declares end of close US ties, plans talks with Trump amid tariff row
Canada and the United States «is over,» Prime Minister Mark Carney said Thursday, after President Donald Trump announced steep auto tariffs. Trump's planned 25 percent levy on vehicle imports to the United States is to come into force next week and could be devastating for a Canadian auto industry that supports an estimated 500,000 jobs. After Trump's announcement, Carney paused his campaign ahead of Canada's April 28 election to return to Ottawa for a meeting of cabinet members working on tactics in the trade war with the United States. He called Trump's auto tariffs «unjustified,» and said they were in breach of existing trade deals between the countries. He also warned Canadians that Trump had permanently altered relations with the United States and that, regardless of any future trade deals, there would be «no turning back.»

Kunal Kamra row: Hansal Mehta says Kangana Ranaut did not face vandalism, actress schools him. 'You're insecure and mediocre'
‘The Buckingham Murders’ director took to X to express his support for the comedian. He flagged an abusive post that targeted Kamra. In response, an X user asked him why he did not stand up for Ranaut when her home was demolished in 2020, to which he retorted, “Was her house vandalised? Did goons enter her premises? Did they do this to challenge her freedom of expression or for alleged FSI violations? Please enlighten me. Maybe I don't know the facts." Ranaut, not to mince words, fired back. She stated how she was called slurs and her home was wrecked with bulldozers before the courts opened. She also claimed that people laughed at her ordeal and “raised a toast” to her public humiliation.

foreign selling. The rebound on the heels of a prolonged period of gloom has helped the main indices erase all their 2025 losses. The rupee advanced to 85.63, its strongest this year against the dollar, rising for the ninth day in a row. The NSE Nifty rose 307.95 points or 1.32% to close at 23,658.35. The BSE Sensex rose 1,078.87 points or 1.4% to end at 77,984.38. Both indices are up 5.1% in the six trading sessions. «Monday's upside was due to a combination of short covering, and expectations of some relaxation or less punitive tariffs which were supposed to be implemented on April 2,» said Pankaj Pandey, head of retail research at ICICI Direct.

Kamra show row: Fadnavis must recover damages from Shiv Sainiks involved in vandalism, says Raut
Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut on Monday demanded that Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis recover damages from Shiv Sainiks who vandalised the studio where stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra's show was shot. Speaking to reporters, Raut alleged that there was «gunda raj» (hooliganism) in the state capital and said Fadnavis was incapable of handling the home department. The Mumbai police have registered an FIR against Kamra for allegedly making defamatory remarks against Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde during a show. The police also registered a case against nearly 40 Shiv Sena workers for allegedly vandalising the Habitat Studio in Mumbai's Khar area, where Kamra's show with «gaddar» (traitor) jibe at Shinde was filmed, and a hotel where the studio is located. The comedian taunted Shinde using a modified version of a Hindi song from the film «Dil To Pagal Hai», eliciting laughter from the audience. Raut said Kamra hadn't named anyone in the satire song and questioned the need for the agitated reaction.

Cash-discovery row: Delhi HC CJ's report, police video prompt CJI to set up in-house inquiry panel
Yashwant Varma's residence and preliminary findings of the Delhi High Court chief justice calling for a «deeper probe» have prompted Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna to constitute a committee to conduct an in-house inquiry into the allegations against the judge. In an unprecedented move, the top court, late on Saturday evening, uploaded on its website the inquiry report of Delhi High Court Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya — complete with photos and videos — regarding the alleged discovery of a substantial amount of cash from the residence of Justice Varma, a judge in the high court. Justice Upadhyaya's report to the CJI contains material with regard to official communication that says four to five semi-burnt sacks of Indian currency notes were found from the judge's Lutyens' Delhi residence. «On examining the incident reported, the material available and the response of Justice Yashwant Varma, what I find is that the Commissioner of Police in his report dated March 16, 2025 has reported that as per the guard posted at the residence of Justice Yashwant Varma, the debris and other partially-burnt articles were removed from the room where the fire had broken out in the morning of March 15, 2025… »Accordingly, I am of the prima facie opinion that the entire matter warrants a deeper probe," Justice Upadhyaya has said said in his report dated March 21 and made public on Saturday evening.

LeBron James returns from 7-game injury absence, and nothing else goes right in Lakers' blowout loss
Los Angeles Lakers down the stretch toward the postseason. And then almost nothing else went right for the Lakers during a 146-115 thrashing from the Chicago Bulls. «We've got to play better basketball than we did tonight, and what we did on our last road trip,» James said before the Lakers headed out on a four-game trip beginning in Orlando on Monday. James scored 17 points after missing the Lakers' previous seven games with a strained left groin, but the top scorer in NBA history looked rusty in certain moments — particularly late in the first quarter, when he threw a long sideline inbounds pass that curled out of bounds without ever getting close to one of his teammates. But James' return was just one part of a comprehensively poor effort by the Lakers, who took their second straight loss and hit the latest trough in their peaks-and-valleys season since acquiring Luka Doncic.

Tamil Nadu delimitation meet done with eye on '26 polls as DMK lacks achievements to highlight: Sitharaman
DMK was raising «emotional» issues like alleged Hindi imposition and Parliament delimitation as it had nothing to showcase as its own achievements before people during next year's Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu. Slamming the state's law and order situation, she said there was «lawlessness.» Sitharaman targeted the ruling party over the Anna University woman student sexual assault case. «What happened to that woman? Is the accused your party worker or not? Till date, what is the answer for the Kallakurichi incident,» she asked about the 2024 hooch tragedy that killed many persons. She questioned the DMK as to what has its government achieved 'distinctly' due to its efforts and wondered if it can mention any welfare measures brought to Tamil Nadu. «Nothing,» she said. «So take up emotional issues to hide your inability, corruption...at least these are old issues, now TASMAC (irregularities) has come up. Just like how scams used to come out daily during Manmohan Singh (UPA) government, of which DMK was a part. Such tales are happening,» in the current dispensation in TN, she told a media interaction.

CJI Khanna forms committee to probe allegations of cash discovery from Justice Varma’s home
Justice Yashwant Varma's residence. Delhi High Court judge Justice Yashwant Varma was on Friday at the centre of a huge row over reports of alleged cash discovery from his official home after a fire incident following which its chief justice initiated an in-house inquiry against him and the Supreme Court clarified the move to transfer him was not linked to the probe. After reports emerged that Justice Varma, 56, was being repatriated to Allahabad High Court in the wake of the alleged cash discovery, the Supreme Court came out with a clarification that the proposal to transfer him was «independent and separate from the in-house enquiry procedure». Justice Varma, who is the second senior-most judge in the Delhi High Court, was appointed to the court on October 11, 2021. The purported discovery of the huge stash of cash happened following a fire at Varma's Lutyens Delhi residence at around 11.35 pm on March 14, prompting the Delhi fire department personnel to rush to the spot and douse it. The quantum of the alleged discovered amount was also not known. The incident created ripples in the legal circuit, with many voices calling for the judge's resignation. Some also criticised the move only to transfer him.

Delimitation row: At Stalin-organised inter-party meet, Telangana CM Reddy claims "north will make us secondary citizens"
delimitation of parliamentary seats, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin on Saturday convened the first Joint Action Committee (JAC) meeting of several states to rally support for opposing the plan. The meeting, held in Chennai, marked the beginning of a coordinated effort to safeguard India’s federal structure, which, according to Stalin, is under threat. Describing the gathering as a «historic day» for India's federal system, Stalin emphasized that the struggle would likely extend to the legal realm. He stated, «Today will be etched in history as the day when states that have contributed to our nation's development came together to safeguard its federal structure by ensuring #FairDelimitation.» The event saw a notable presence of political leaders and chief ministers from Kerala, Telangana, Punjab, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh, all of whom voiced concerns about the Centre’s proposal. Stalin introduced the meeting with a call for unity, urging the states to fight for a «fair» and equitable delimitation process that wouldn’t undermine their representation. Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy echoed these sentiments, arguing that if the proposed delimitation, which is based on population numbers, were implemented, it would marginalize southern states. «If this happens, the north will make us secondary citizens,» Reddy said.

Delimitation row: DMK-led Joint Action Committee tells Centre to freeze Parliamentary constituencies by 25 more years
Parliamentary constituencies, based on the 1971 Census population, by another 25 years and decided that MPs would submit a joint representation to press for demands to Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the ongoing Parliamentary session. A resolution adopted in the JAC meeting said that any delimitation exercise carried out by the union government to improve the «content and character» of democracy should be carried out transparently, enabling political parties of all the states, state governments and other stakeholders to deliberate, discuss and contribute. «Given the fact that the legislative intent behind the 42nd, 84th and 87th Constitutional amendments was to protect / incentivise states which have implemented population control measures effectively and the goal of national population stabilisation has not yet been achieved, the freeze on Parliamentary constituencies based on 1971 Census Population, should be extended by another 25 years,» it said. The states which have effectively implemented the population control programme and consequently whose population share has come down, should not be penalised and the Centre must enact necessary constitutional amendments for this purpose. «The core committee consisting of Members of Parliament from the represented states will coordinate the parliamentary strategies to counter any attempts by the union government to undertake any delimitation exercise contrary to the principles mentioned above. The core committee of MPs shall submit a joint representation on the above lines to the Prime Minister of India during the ongoing Parliamentary session,» the resolution said.
