Haryana schools to replace 'Good Morning' with 'Jai Hind'
Haryana schools will change from «Good Morning» to «Jai Hind» as part of an initiative to foster patriotism among students, ToI reported on August 9. The Haryana Directorate of School Education has mandated this change, instructing school principals, headmasters, and education officers at district and block levels to implement it from August 15. The state government aims to «inculcate a deep sense of patriotism and national pride» in the students by making this shift. The department emphasised that the new greeting should be used before the national flag is hoisted on Independence Day. The idea is that using «Jai Hind» as a daily greeting will inspire students with a sense of national unity and respect for India's rich history.

Mysterious noise sparks panic in landslide-hit Wayanad
Edakkal area of Kerala's landslide-hit Wayanad district complained on Friday that they heard a noise coming from under the earth, creating panic among residents. Local residents told reporters they heard a huge sound, accompanied by a jerk-like sensation, prompting government authorities to investigate. The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) said it is examining seismic records and also attempting local reconnaissance to find if anything is anomalous. «As of now seismic records do not show any indications of movements,» it said.

Why 'Stupid Radishes' are causing panic in China
ride-hailing drivers are facing the threat of job loss from artificial intelligence as robotaxis begin to proliferate. Self-driving technology, still experimental, is being aggressively greenlit in China compared to the US, where approvals are often suspended after accidents. At least 19 Chinese cities are testing robotaxis and robobuses, with seven cities approving tests without human-driver monitors from at least five industry leaders: Apollo Go, Pony.ai, WeRide, AutoX, and SAIC Motor. Apollo Go, a subsidiary of technology giant Baidu, plans to deploy 1,000 robotaxis in Wuhan by year-end and operate in 100 cities by 2030. Pony.ai, backed by Japan's Toyota Motor, operates 300 robotaxis with plans to increase to 1,000 by 2026. WeRide is known for autonomous taxis, vans, buses, and street sweepers, while AutoX, backed by Alibaba Group, operates in cities including Beijing and Shanghai. SAIC Motor has been operating robotaxis since 2021. In the US, Alphabet's Waymo operates uncrewed robotaxis that collect fares, with over 1,000 cars in San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Phoenix. Cruise, backed by General Motors, resumed testing in April after an accident last year.

Morning Coffee: 21-year-olds applying to private equity’s most desired job urged to be “nice”. Jefferies' CEO says good times are back
The young people who get an undergraduate internship at Blackstone might consider that they’ve pretty much won the lottery. There are very few of them – the “summer analyst” class is no more than 150, but that includes people from MBAs and law school. The private equity firm's 0.3% acceptance rate is lower than Citadel’s 0.5%, and they get paid somewhere in the region of $20,000 for ten weeks of work.

Democrats Harris, Walz campaign together for first time as White House ticket
Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris and her newly selected vice presidential running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, campaigned for the first time together on Tuesday in Philadelphia, kicking off a multi-day tour of battleground states aimed at introducing Walz to the national stage. In his remarks to a raucous crowd of more than 10,000 at Temple University, Walz described his upbringing in a small Nebraska town, his 24 years serving in the Army National Guard and his prior career as a high school social studies teacher and football coach. «It was my students who encouraged me to run for office,» he said. «They saw in me what I was hoping to instill in them: a commitment of common good, a belief that one person can make a difference.»

Tim Walz: Kamala Harris taps Minnesota governor as VP pick, sources say
Kamala Harris picked Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz to be her running mate on Tuesday, according to three people familiar with the decision. In choosing Walz, she is turning to a Midwestern governor, military veteran and union supporter who helped enact an ambitious Democratic agenda for his state, including sweeping protections for abortion rights and generous aid to families.Harris hopes to shore up her campaign’s standing across the upper Midwest, a critical region in presidential politics that often serves as a buffer for Democrats seeking the White House.

Organised loot by airlines in jacking up fares to Gulf countries: MP in Rajya Sabha
Gulf countries during the June to September holiday season have risen five-fold, causing financial hardships to poor labourers and the middle class migrants who want to visit India, a Rajya Sabha member said on Monday, asking the government to stop this "organised loot". Raising the issue +through a Zero Hour mention in the House, Jebi Mather Hisham (Congress) said June-September is normally a school holiday season in the Middle East countries but this has turned into a «horror season» due to the «exorbitant, exploitative and extortionist» airfares implemented by the airlines. «We call it organised loot because it (the fare hike) has not doubled or tripled but has increased by more than five times,» she said. Against the one-way fare of Rs 8,000 from Gulf countries to Kerala, a poor labourer is now having to shell out Rs 46,000 one-way and about Rs 1 lakh for return fare.

Byju Raveendran files caveat before Supreme Court against creditor Glas Trust Company
Byju Raveendran has filed a caveat before the Supreme Court against its US-based creditor Glas Trust Company LLC over the order passed by the insolvency appellate tribunal NCLAT. The caveat was filed before the apex court on August 3, a day after the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) passed an order restoring the board of edtech major after setting aside insolvency proceedings against it. Glas Trust has opposed the Rs 158.9 crore dues settlement with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) alleging the money paid by Riju Raveendran (brother of Byju Raveendran) was tainted and was a case of «round-tripping». Anticipating the US-based creditor would challenge the NCLAT order before the Supreme Court, Byju Raveendran had filed a caveat requesting to be heard before the apex court passes any order on a plea filed by the US-based creditors.
