Books pulled from B.C. district curriculum in what premier calls ‘crazy decision’
Surrey School District has quietly pulled four books from the reading curriculum for students in Grade 10 and above due to concerns about controversial themes. In November 2023, a panel of 12 teachers decided to pull the books from the recommended reading curriculum. The books will still be available in the library and teachers can apply to teach them, but they won’t be part of the recommended reading lists. The four books are: To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie and In the Heat of the Night by John Ball.Ritinder Matthew, the communications officer for the Surrey School District, told Global News on Thursday that the review of these four books began more than a year ago after feedback from parents and others in the community.“We received a lot of feedback from families of students not feeling safe in the classroom when these resources were used,” she said.Using To Kill a Mockingbird as an example, Matthew said the review found the “portrayal of Black characters as one-dimensional, the use of the white saviour trope, the use of ableist language, the use of the N-word, noting it’s normalized in the text and not necessarily used as a slur, but often as another word for Black people.

From risk-reward perspective, better to be tilted towards largecaps: Harsha Upadhyaya
Harsha Upadhyaya, CIO-Equity, Kotak AMC, says it is definitely difficult to find value buys in this market, but there are several sectors which are likely to grow at a decent teens kind of earnings trajectory. Those are the names which will have potential to outperform the market. Maybe the volatility will increase, but still there is enough growth on the table. Upadhayaya further says: “It is not that mid and smallcaps will not give returns or correct a lot at this point of time, it is just that from a risk-reward perspective, it makes sense to have a little bit of tilt towards largecaps and that is what we have been suggesting to most of our investors.”

Trimming PSU stock positions gradually: Anish Tawakley, ICICI Prudential Mutual Fund
With PSU stocks rallying non-stop amid heavy buying by retail investors, Anish Tawakley, Deputy CIO – Equity, ICICI Prudential AMC, says his team has turned cautious on the PSU space since the start of 2024 due to valuation concerns and have been gradually trimming PSU holdings. “Over the past three years, PSUs have moved from being one of the cheapest segments in the market to a situation where some of the PSUs are today overvalued. This has been largely possible owing to the good work done by the PSU managements coupled with the way the government has ensured that these companies worked in the interest of the shareholders,” Tawakley says. Edited excerpts from a chat with the fund manager: ICICI Prudential Business Cycle Fund has outperformed in the last 3 years by nearly doubling money. These 3 years have been very interesting because many cycles came and went. How did you manage to thrive in the shifting cyclical landscape? Anish Tawakley: Three years back the economy had spare capacity and was experiencing weak demand.
