Govt sets tough conditions for Elon Musk's Starlink to enter India
Elon Musk’s satellite communications venture, Starlink, to establish a control centre in India. This move aims to enable authorities to suspend or shut down communication services in sensitive or troubled areas when necessary to maintain law and order, according to top sources cited by TOI. As per the TOI report, the government has also outlined security requirements, including allowing law-enforcement agencies to intercept calls through official channels when required. These directives come as Starlink’s application for a satellite communications licence reaches the final stage. The company has been working on agreements with Reliance Jio and Airtel for marketing, deployment, and network enhancement.

"Approach will be guided by India First,": Piyush Goyal on his meeting with US Trade representative
Piyush Goyal on Friday said that he had a «forward looking» discussion with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer on a mutually beneficial bilateral trade agreement. «Our approach will be guided by 'India First', 'Viksit Bharat' and our Comprehensive Strategic Partnership,» the Commerce Minister wrote on his X timeline, sharing a photograph of the meeting. Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal was in the US last week. His visit to the US followed US President Donald Trump and PM Modi's plans to negotiate the first tranche of a mutually beneficial, multi-sector Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) by the fall of 2025. The two leaders had committed to designating senior representatives to advance these negotiations. During the recent meeting between President Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the two leaders resolved to expand trade and investment to make their citizens more prosperous, nations stronger, economies more innovative, and supply chains more resilient. They resolved to deepen the US-India trade relationship to promote growth that ensures fairness, national security and job creation. To this end, the leaders set a bold new goal for bilateral trade — "Mission 500" — aiming to more than double total bilateral trade to USD 500 billion by 2030.

Hundreds of federal offices could begin closing this summer at DOGE's behest, internal records show
Elon Musk's budget-cutting advisers to terminate leases that they say waste money. Musk's Department of Government Efficiency maintains a list of canceled real estate leases on its website, but internal documents obtained by The Associated Press contain a crucial detail: when those cancellations are expected to take effect. The documents from inside the General Services Administration, the US government's real estate manager, list dozens of federal office and building leases expected to end by June 30, with hundreds more slated over the coming months. The rapid pace of cancellations has raised alarms, with some agencies and lawmakers appealing to DOGE to exempt specific buildings. Several agencies are facing 20 or more lease cancellations in all, including the IRS, the Social Security Administration, the US Department of Agriculture and the US Geological Survey. Many of the terminations would affect agencies that aren't as well-known but oversee services critical to many Americans. They span from a Boise, Idaho, office of the Bureau of Reclamation — which oversees water supply and deals with disputes across the often-parched American West — to a Joliet, Illinois, outpost of the Railroad Retirement Board, which provides benefits for railroad workers and their survivors.

G7 seeks unity as Trump's tariffs, Ukraine stance weighs on ties
G7 nations were set to negotiate late into the night over a joint statement to show a united front in Canada on Thursday after weeks of tension between U.S. allies and President Donald Trump over his upending of Western trade and security policy. The Group of Seven ministers from Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the United States, along with the European Union, convened in the remote tourist town of La Malbaie, nestled in the Quebec hills, for meetings on Thursday and Friday that in the past have been broadly consensual. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio briefed his colleagues on talks on Tuesday with Ukraine in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, where Kyiv said it was ready to support a 30-day ceasefire deal. But officials said ambiguous comments by Russian President Vladimir Putin left delegates unclear where things stood. In the run-up to the first G7 meeting of Canada's presidency, the crafting of an agreed all-encompassing final statement had been tough, but diplomats said the atmosphere since had been positive and candid.

‘Gensol liquidity woes may last 90 days; paring BluSmart ties’
Gensol Engineering’s liquidity mismatch is temporary and its linkages with ride-hailing service BluSmart are being wound down, the founder of both companies told ET amid a crisis that has seen the solar engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) company lose 65% of market value in a month. The crash accelerated after rating agencies ICRA and CARE downgraded Gensol Engineering’s credit rating to default. ICRA cited debtservicing documents submitted by Gensol that it said were “apparently falsified.” This will be investigated, said Anmol Jaggi, Gensol Engineering’s chairman and managing director and cofounder of BluSmart. On Thursday, the company announced a Rs 600 crore fundraise to quell investors’ nerves. “We are working on two areas,” Jaggi told ET. “A committee with independent external experts has been formed to investigate the falsification of documents charge. Neither me nor my brother will sit on that committee. We have announced a fundraise of Rs 600 crore through foreign currency convertible bonds and promoter contribution. We expect liquidity challenges for next the 90 days till when credit rating agencies can review their outlook.” The board has approved a stock split in the ratio of 10:1. The promoters will exercise warrants at Rs 56 apiece for shares with a face value of Re 1 each. That amounts to Rs 560 at the existing face value of Rs 10 per share prior to the split. This is a premium of 113% to the current share price of Rs 262.

Cuban, a vocal Trump critic, is funding startups led by former staffers from the General Services Administration (GSA) and White House tech units like 18F and the US Digital Service (USDS). 60 foreign militants currently active in Jammu & Kashmir
The recent surge in terrorist attacks in Jammu region has been attributed to the involvement of active foreign militants, with Union home minister Amit Shah recently directing security agencies to step up the fight against terrorism by aiming for «zero infiltration». On January 30, while attempting to infiltrate from Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), two militants said to be associated with Lashkar-e-Taiba were killed in a gunfight with the Army along the Line of Control in Poonch district of J&K. The presence of foreign militants, despite the army and Border Security Force (BSF) claiming «zero infiltration», has been a cause of concern among the security agencies. These militants have been carrying out attacks on security forces in the Jammu region with logistical support from overground workers, said officials.

India, Mauritius ink pact during PM's visit to combat money laundering, corruption
money laundering, corruption, fraud, asset recovery and the financing of illicit activities, the ED said Thursday. The collaboration between Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the Financial Crimes Commission (FCC) of Mauritius will «bolster» financial enforcement capabilities and will also contribute to broader economic and security cooperation between the two nations, the federal probe agency said in a statement. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was exchanged in the presence of Modi and Prime Minister of Mauritius Navinchandra Ramgoolam. During the discussions leading to the MoU, the ED and the FCC explored the possibilities of «joint operations» to detect, investigate and prosecute cross-border money laundering offences, according to the ED. They also underlined the significance of exchange programmes, experience sharing, training and skill building of the officers of both the organisations, it said. «Discussions were held on how ED can assist FCC by providing technological assistance and sharing of their digital forensic tools and best practices, towards ensuring better data seizing and extraction, and more productive data analysis,» the statement said.

Days after Jaffar train hijack, militants launch suicide attack on Pakistan military base, many killed
Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), a militant group operating along the Afghan-Pakistani border, allegedly carried out a suicide attack on the Jandola military camp in the Tank District of Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, according to several media reports. Pakistani news outlet Geo News reported that the Pakistan army killed eight to nine militants following the suicide attack near the Frontier Corps (FC) camp in South Waziristan district. Police officials told the media that a loud explosion was heard in Jandola, followed by heavy gunfire. Militants attempted to attack the Jandola checkpost but were stopped by Pakistan security forces. A suicide bomber, however, exploded a vehicle near the FC camp, Geo News quoted security sources as saying. The attack comes days after the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA), a militant group, on March 11, hijacked the Jaffar Express, a train en route from Quetta to Peshawar, in the strategic Bolan Valley. The train, which was carrying over 450 passengers, including 200 security personnel, became the center of a high-stakes standoff between the BLA and Pakistani security forces. Pakistani forces reported on Wednesday that they had eliminated all 50 attackers. According to military statements, the assailants killed 21 passengers, while the remaining passengers were safely rescued.
