Marriage, money and maternity: A third of young women in Japan may never have children, says study
Japan may never have children, a government institute said on Wednesday, in the latest data spelling an uphill battle to reverse a dwindling population in the world's third-largest economy. The National Institute of Population and Social Security Research (IPSS) estimated in a report that 33.4% of women born in 2005 would be childless. The most optimistic scenario had that number at 24.6% and the worst at 42%. Prime Minister Fumio Kishida in June promised to tackle the population crisis with «unprecedented» measures including bigger payouts for families with three or more children. A Kyodo News poll published shortly after, however, showed that about two-thirds of the public were not hopeful the policies would be effective. «With the rising cost of living, I don't think people feel they can afford to or comfortably say they want to have children,» 23-year-old Anna Tanaka told Reuters. The number of children in Japan has been falling for more than four decades as the appetite for marriage and parenting has waned and financial worries have grown, surveys show. The IPSS determines the expected percentage of childless women by taking into account factors such as age of marriage in estimating the fertility rate. Miho Iwasawa, the IPSS's director of population dynamics research, said people were getting married later, leading to a decline in births. In 2020, women got married for the first time at an average age of 29.4, or 3.9 years later than in 1985, government data shows.

Joe Oliver: Shh! Was that the Liberal leadership race getting underway?
Anita Anand and Chrystia Freeland recently drew public attention to their contrasting personas and political positioning. Anand, now President of the Treasury Board, was ousted as Minister of National Defence, supposedly for advocating too strenuously to fund the cash-strapped military and for excessive self-promotion. Clearly undeterred, she was quick out of the gate of her new gig with a letter to cabinet colleagues ordering them to come up with $15.4 billion in expenditure cuts over the next five years. For her part, Freeland used a commencement address at Northeastern University in Boston to ask rhetorically whether capitalist democracy is still effective.

Be wary of symptoms like vomiting & jaw pain! Study says late diagnosis leads to worse heart disease outcomes in women than men
Women suffer worse outcomes when diagnosed with and treated for cardiac issues, according to the results of fifteen studies from 50 countries, including India. The researchers noted that the discrepancy is the result of women presenting with additional non-traditional chest pain symptoms including vomiting, jaw pain and abdominal pain. If and when these symptoms are missed by doctors, or by the patients themselves, diagnosis and treatments are delayed, they said. «We found stunning differences between men and women in the diagnosing of cardiovascular disease, treatment and symptoms,» said Mahdi O.

Warner Bros Discovery taps media veteran Thompson as CEO of CNN
Warner Bros Discovery named Mark Thompson as CEO of CNN on Wednesday, tasking the former New York Times and BBC chief with reviving a news network beset by sagging ratings and falling profits.Thompson succeeds Chris Licht, who stepped down in June after a rocky one year at the helm that included a divisive town hall with former Republican U.S. President Donald Trump and the shutdown of CNN+ streaming service just weeks after its launch. With Thompson, 66, Warner Bros Discovery is turning to an executive with ample experience at the top level, unlike Licht — a former TV producer who had worked on «The Late Show With Stephen Colbert.» During his 8-year tenure as the CEO of the Times, Thompson helped transform the Gray Lady into a beacon for newspapers in the internet age by focusing on digital subscriptions. The Times' share price grew nearly five-fold in the period, widely outperforming the benchmark S&P 500 index. «Mark is a true innovator who has transformed for the digital age two of the world's most respected news organizations,» Warner Bros Discovery CEO David Zaslav said in a statement. A big focus area for Thompson is likely to be the recently announced round-the-clock news service called CNN Max, which will be available on Warner Bros Discovery's streaming platform. CNN Max is looking to capitalize on the immediacy of breaking news and analysis, differentiating it from CNN+, which featured lifestyle programs. The news network's ratings have been sagging, even as the company attempts to attract more Republican viewers. Its profit fell under $1 billion in 2022 and is expected to be modestly higher this year than last, at $938.6 million, according to data from S&P Global Market Intelligence.

Mikhail Vedernikov ordered all flights to and from the Pskov airport canceled Wednesday, citing the need to assess the damage during daylight. Footage and images posted on social media overnight showed smoke billowing over the city of Pskov, and a large blaze.

'Breaking Bad' stars Bryan Cranston & Aaron Paul reunite to resume negotiations amid Hollywood strike
Breaking Bad" has reunited to call upon Hollywood studios to resume negotiations with striking screen actors. «We want you to come back to the table with us,» Bryan Cranston said in a plea to the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers outside Sony Pictures Studios on Tuesday. Cranston was joined by Aaron Paul, Jesse Plemons and other members of the «Breaking Bad» universe in an effort to energise picket lines more than a month after SAG-AFTRA joined striking Hollywood writers. Both guilds are seeking to address issues brought about by the dominance of streaming services, which have changed all aspects of production and pay in the industry. «The way things were structured 10 years ago made a lot of sense and it made it more possible for journeymen-type actors, actors in the middle that are working just as a hard or harder,» Plemons said. By its final season, which aired more than a decade ago, «Breaking Bad» was one of the most watched and highest rated cable TV shows ever. The AMC hit series has achieved enduring popularity on Netflix, but its stars say that has not been reflected in their pay. «I don't get a piece from Netflix on 'Breaking Bad' to be totally honest and that's insane to me,» Paul said.

India's economy in April to June likely grew at the fastest pace in a year, bolstered by central and state governments opening up their wallets for capex, stronger consumption demand and higher activities in the services sector, according to some economists. A median forecast of an ET poll of 20 economists pegged the growth rate at 7.8 per cent for the first quarter of this financial year that started Apr. 1.
