Government capital expenditure showed a promising recovery in Q2 FY2025, rising by 10.3% YoY to ₹2.3 trillion, reversing the sharp 35% contraction witnessed in Q1 FY2025. This rebound was led by key infrastructure-focused ministries such as the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and the Ministry of Railways, which posted growth rates of 41.7% and 8.0%, respectively. However, the pace of state government spending remained muted, with the combined capital outlay and net lending of 22 states increasing by only 2.1% YoY in the quarter.

bad loans by banks fell in the September quarter for the second consecutive period based on year-on-year comparison driven by the public sector banks (PSBs). For a sample of 29 publicly listed banks, provisioning for nonperforming assets (NPA) fell by 2.9% to ₹27,318.2 crore. For PSBs, it fell by 11.6% to ₹14,628.3 crore with half of them reporting a year-on-year drop in loan loss provisioning. PSBs, including Punjab National Bank, Central Bank of India and Indian Overseas Bank, recorded a 82-93% fall in the NPA provisioning. On the other hand, private sector banks showed 12.5% increase in NPA provisioning for the quarter to ₹12,690 crore, led by select banks including ICICI Bank, Axis bank, Kotak Bank, IDBI Bank and Federal bank. Three out of every four private sector banks reported a year-on-year increase in their NPA provisioning. As a result, their share in the quarterly NPA provisioning increased to 46.5% from 41.2% a year ago and 42.1% in the previous quarter.

Bharat Dev Varma, husband of actress Moon Moon Sen and father to actresses Raima and Riya Sen, passed away at his Kolkata residence on Tuesday. According to reports, Bharat’s health took a critical turn, prompting his family to summon an ambulance from a hospital in the Dhakuria area. Unfortunately, he succumbed before he could reach the medical facility. Bharat Dev Varma was a descendant of the former royal family of Tripura. His mother, Ila Devi, was a princess of Cooch Behar and the elder sister of Gayatri Devi, the Maharani of Jaipur. His grandmother, Indira, was the only daughter of Sayajirao Gaekwad III, the Maharaja of Baroda. Bharat married Moon Moon Sen in 1978. Moon Moon also has royal lineage, being the daughter of iconic Bengali actress Suchitra Sen and Dibanath Sen. Her father hailed from a prominent family in Ballygunge Place and was the son of Adinath Sen, one of Kolkata’s wealthiest businessmen. Additionally, her great-grandfather, Dinanath Sen, served as the Diwan (minister) to the Maharaja of Tripura.
