SAT orders Religare to apply with Sebi for open offer by Burmans
Securities Appellate Tribunal (SAT) on Wednesday directed Religare Enterprises (REL) to apply with the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) for the open offer made by the Burman family to raise its stake in the company. The tribunal, which hears appeals against the Sebi orders, however, stayed the show cause notice issued by the capital markets regulator to the financial services company and its board. In June, Sebi had asked Religare to apply with it the open offer proposal by the Burman family to purchase an additional 26% stake from the firm's public shareholders. Religare approached SAT against the Sebi directive.

Why is Joe Biden angry? White House staff fear briefing him on key issues
White House staff and those who are working closely with President Joe Biden have been left baffled after the first US Presidential debate. It has been reported by the New York Post that the president has been continuously expressing his anger and taking it out on his aides. The staff were also not briefed regarding the outcomes of the first presidential debate and were left with many unanswered questions, according to Axios. White House has dismissed these reports and clarified that Biden has been receptive of different ideas and is preparing for the election campaign ahead of the US Presidential Election in November. In a diplomatic quirk, Russia chairs a UN meeting decrying its strike on a Ukraine kids' hospital
UN Security Council members confronted Russia on Tuesday over a missile strike the previous day that destroyed part of Ukraine's largest children's hospital, pouring out condemnations at an emergency meeting chaired by Moscow's own ambassador. Russia denies responsibility for the strike at the hospital, where at least two staffers were killed. France and Ecuador asked for the session at the Security Council, but Russia led it as the current holder of the council's rotating presidency, putting Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia on the receiving end of the criticism. «Mr President, please stop this war. It has been going on for too long,» Slovenian Ambassador Samuel Zbogar appealed.

Houthis mount biggest month of attacks on ships this year
Yemen’s Houthi rebels conducted the largest number of attacks on commercial ships so far in 2024 in June, fresh proof that the group’s threat to trade intensified in recent weeks. There were 16 confirmed attacks on ships in June, according to figures published by the naval forces operating in the region. That’s the most for any single month in 2024, and was only eclipsed in December when more vessels were still sailing through the region. Separate figures published by the Washington Institute show a similar trend. Attacks by the Houthis ramped up in June, having shown signs of diminishing in the preceding months. The incidents included the second confirmed sinking of a vessel, as well as the first successful attack with a seaborne drone. The attacks are helping to contribute to the second-largest increase in a gauge of global sea transport on record as vessels sail thousands of miles extra around Africa.

Easynomics: Of exam paper leaks, Byju’s, Kota Factory, and Dunki
₹200 a pop (well, it was the 1990s, things were a lot cheaper then.) Very soon, students started walking out one by one simply because they had only prepared for the questions that had been leaked and no more. On top of that it was a difficult paper—not of a kind where one could just vomit what one had mugged up, which is how most school and college exams were back then. After the exam was over, the explanation offered was that the administrators had come to know that the paper had been leaked and so had changed it to the backup question paper, which apparently had also been prepared and printed.

Capex blues: New project announcements plunge to multi-year low in Q1
₹59,931 crore worth of new projects across the country during the quarter, the lowest in over a decade and down 92% year-on-year, showed the latest data from the project-tracking database of the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE). The data is provisional and can be updated later. Private companies continued to lead new investments in the June quarter, but they, too, fell below ₹1 trillion for the first time since the June quarter of 2020, which saw a hit due to the covid-led nationwide lockdown.

High-priced S&P 500 powers ahead untroubled by political stress
Investor resilience was on display again in a week in which high election drama couldn’t keep the S&P 500 from doing what it’s done in nine of the last 11 weeks: go up, this time in all sessions. Even markets that initially lurched on President Joe Biden’s debate travails, such as Treasuries, calmed appreciably as economic data bolstered the case for rate cuts.
