Rediscovering Mangalore's culinary heritage: The legacy of Balthu chutney
Balthu Chutney’s story was probably first documented in print in the Mangalore Magazine, published by St Aloysius College (established 1880). Starting in the June 1899 issue and written in first person, it described how Balthu, or Balthasar, a young Christian from near Mangalore, made his way to Chennapatnam (Madras), where he became a cook for the Jesuits. It was an era when Hyder Ali had become the dominant power in South India. The Jesuits were taken to his camp, where they were produced before his 17-year-old son Tipu (which would date this to 1768). By chance on that day, the only food available for the sultan and his son was a basic pilau. Balthu quickly made a chutney that was so tasty that they commended him. Balthu said that he could make a vast variety of chutneys and was ready to serve the royal family. Despite being a practising Catholic, “I was there and then named royal chutney manufacturer.” He was later able to use this privileged position to help the around 60,000 Mangalore Catholics who were taken prisoner to Seringapatam in 1784 for their alleged treachery in supporting the British.

Why China keeps making more cars than it needs
BEIJING—In 2019, a little-known Chinese carmaker named Zhido went bust after Beijing cut subsidies for the tiny electric cars it made, crushing its sales. Now it is back. Earlier this month, the company released a boxy new mini-electric vehicle called “Caihong," or “Rainbow" in Chinese, which comes in seven pastel colors—including “Mint Mambo"—and has a starting price equivalent to around $4,400.

Charting the global economy: BOJ holds; US inflation won’t let up
Bank of Japan kept interest rates unchanged, driving the yen to a fresh 34-year low, while US inflation showed few signs of simmering down. The Japanese yen slumped as BOJ Governor Kazuo Ueda played down the impact on inflation from a weakening currency. While he’s indicated a preference to proceed gradually with rate increases, Ueda is trying to avoid restraining the economy. That’s becoming even more challenging after US data this week indicated inflation accelerated in the first quarter, reinforcing expectations the Federal Reserve is likely to keep interest rates higher for longer.

Get set for a bottoms-up market in first half of FY25: Amit Khurana
Amit Khurana, Head of Equities, Dolat Capital, says for the next few months, bottoms-up stock picking should be the preferred mode and look out for names either showing signs of turnaround or names which have visibility even though you may have to pay a little bit of a premium on the valuation side, but the momentum continues to be supportive for those sectors or stocks. You were slightly cautious on the market and by mid of March that caution played out, however, it was short-lived and the market rebounded. What is your current prognosis of the way the earnings season is panning out? Did you request the clients to buy that dip or are they still sitting on the sides? Amit Khurana: Yes, the correction did play out which we were anticipating but the depth of it and the breadth, I did not come as much as one would have wished for.
