Asian shares slip into BOJ meeting, US inflation test
The Bank of Japan (BOJ) meets Tuesday amid much chatter that it is considering how and when to move away from negative interest rates. None of the analysts polled by Reuters expected a definitive move at this meeting, but policy makers might start laying the groundwork for an eventual shift. April was favoured by 17 of 28 economists as the kick-off for negative rates to be scrapped, making the BOJ one of the few central banks in the world actually tightening. «Since the last meeting in October, 10-year JGB yields have fallen and the yen has appreciated, giving the BOJ little incentive to revise policy at this stage,» said Barclays economist Christian Keller. «We think the BOJ will wait to confirm the result of the 'shunto' wage negotiations next spring, before moving in April.» Japan's Nikkei lost 1.2%, weighed in part by a firm yen.

Wall Street's China stock bulls keep hopes alive for 2024
Wall Street, 2023 is a year to forget. Global investment banks turned almost unanimously optimistic on the market around this time last year, only to be confounded by a 14% drop in the MSCI China Index. Now, as policymakers ramp up efforts to arrest a housing slump and extend funding support for the broader economy, hopes are building again that 2024 will be better. But it's a case of once bitten, twice shy. This time around, expectations are much more modest. «It's like we've stood still in time for 12 months.

QCI may regulate private certification agencies to protect Brand India
NEW DELHI : The Quality Council of India (QCI) is set to come out with regulations that will make it compulsory for private certification agencies to register themselves with accreditation bodies. The idea is to ensure accountability of these agencies so that ‘brand India’ does not suffer from indiscriminate certification by unregulated agencies. There are concerns that private agencies have been issuing ISO 9000 certificates without getting themselves registered with apex accreditation bodies.

Red tape may play spoilsport at new year's eve parties
new year is unlikely to start with a bang in the national capital as most restaurants, pubs, and bars plan to keep things low key on the new year's eve due to various restrictions. “Most restaurants, pubs and bars in Delhi…are not planning any large-scale celebrations…because of the various administrative hassles in procuring multiple permissions and licenses,” said Sandeep Anand Goyle, who heads Delhi chapter of National Restaurant Association of India (NRAI). “Pubs, bars and nightclubs are allowed to operate till 1 am, but they are also sealed at times if decibels are beyond the prescribed limits,” he said. “With all the hassles, people don’t want to plan large-scale celebrations,” Goyle said, adding that the police seal crowd-generating areas and malls, and refrain restaurants from organising parties at their outlets. “Barricades are put on roads leading to markets, commercial complexes, and around the malls, creating hurdles for guests to reach them,” he said.

biggest Hamas tunnel in the Gaza Strip so far, just a few hundred metres from a key border crossing. Such was its size that small vehicles would be able to travel within the tunnel, an AFP photographer granted access to it reported. The underground passage formed part of a wider branching network that stretched for over four kilometres (2.5 miles) and came within 400 metres (1,300 feet) of the Erez border crossing, the army said in a statement. It cost millions of dollars and took years to construct, Israeli forces said, with the project lead by Mohamed Yahya, brother of Hamas chief Yahya Sinwar, who is believed to have masterminded the October 7 attacks. The honeycomb of passageways features a drainage systems, electricity, ventilation, sewage and a communication network as well as rails. The floor is compacted earth while its walls are reinforced concrete and its entrance is a metal cylinder with 1.5 centimetre (half-inch) thick walls.
