Foxtel slams proposal to put women’s sport on free TV list

US Fed expected to pause rate hikes despite higher inflation
US Federal Reserve is widely expected to hold interest rates steady on Wednesday after a summer of mixed economic data, while leaving the door open to another hike if needed. The Fed has raised interest rates 11 times over the last 18 months, lifting its key lending rate to a level not seen for 22 years as it tackles inflation still stubbornly above its long-term target of two percent. After falling sharply over the last year, inflation has ticked up again in recent months due to a spike in energy costs, keeping up the pressure on the Fed. But analysts and traders still broadly expect the US central bank to hold rates steady on September 19-20 in order to give policymakers more time to assess the health of the world's largest economy. «We think the Fed is done with its tightening cycle,» EY Chief Economist Gregory Daco told AFP.

Telcos may spend only half of last year's outlay on ads during cricket world cup: Media planners
Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea — are expected to limit media spending in the upcoming ICC Cricket World Cup, media planners said, adding their cumulative spends for the festive season could well be around half of the ₹350 crore they spent last year. The World Cup, which coincides with the Diwali season this year, will form part of the media plan, but may be restricted to digital activations and point-of-sale promotions, as opposed to mainline television campaigns with only two meaningful telecom advertisers in the market and the need for aggressive high-cost marketing being low, they added. However, the longer festive season — September end to December end — may see the telcos loosen their purse strings, especially if 5G smartphone shipments show signs of pick-up. «We observe that the telecom industry did not invest significantly in the past year, and even the smartphone market is anticipated to launch multiple campaigns, resulting in an upswing in demand for telecom services.

NCLAT stays bankruptcy proceedings against Ind-Swift
National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) granted a stay on initiating bankruptcy proceedings against Ind-Swift Ltd, an affiliate company of Ind-Swift Laboratories, which is selling a part of its pharma business to the Piramal-Bain-backed India Resurgent Fund for ₹1,650 crore, shows a court document. Ind-Swift was admitted for corporate insolvency on September 12 on a petition by trader creditor Allcare Containers claiming overdues of ₹3.12 crore, according to an order passed by the Chandigarh National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT). Last week, the NCLAT stayed the insolvency process till October 30 after the company said that it had settled the principal dues of Allcare but needed time to negotiate the terms of interest payment. Ind-Swift has a 16% stake in Ind-Swift Laboratories, which is selling its active pharmaceutical ingredients and contract research and manufacturing services businesses to the India RF-linked entity, first reported by ET on July 21. The company officially announced the deal on September 6, stating that its board had approved a proposal to sell these two businesses to Synthimed Labs, a portfolio company of the India RF for ₹1,650 crore.

Don’t bet on ECB cuts in H1 of 2024, says governing council member
European Central Bank cuts interest rates in the first half of next year would be a mistake, according to Governing Council member Martins Kazaks. Wage growth in the euro zone hasn't yet peaked and it's unclear how quickly underlying inflation will retreat, the head of Latvia's central bank said. Last week's decision to lift borrowing costs for a 10th straight time puts the ECB more solidly on track to reach its 2% target in 2025, but it's too soon to exclude another hike. “The market shouldn't expect that we would jump too early to cut rates,” Kazaks said in an interview. “We'll start cutting rates when we see that we consistently and significantly start to undershoot our target, and what I can say clearly is that expectations of a rate cut in spring or early summer in my view are not really consistent with the macro scenario that we have.” Traders are starting to price cuts from April of next year and some economists see them as early as June. Projections presented last week show that inflation in the 20-member euro area will take another two years to reach 2%, even as price pressures are set to slow sharply in the coming months. The economy is seen returning to quarterly growth rates of 0.4% in 2024 after stagnating for most of 2023.

Drew Barrymore pauses talk show amid backlash; hopes for resolution of Hollywood strikes
Hollywood strikes, Drew Barrymore has now reversed her decision. The actor-producer and show host said she is pausing The Drew Barrymore Show until the writers' strike is resolved. Drew Barrymore had announced the return of her talk show for Season 4 beginning September 18, 2023. She explained in a video on September 15 saying that she needs to keep her show running to pay the crew. But the actor deleted the video the same day, after backlash from her fans and the film industry.
