Who was the surprise guest at the DNC 2024? It turns out to be Covid-19; here's why
Perhaps at the Democratic National Convention, there was an unexpected guest. Following several convention attendees' positive COVID-19 respiratory illness tests last week in Chicago, health officials are worried about a spike in infections. People also disclosed their diagnoses on social media. Several online users who voiced concerns regarding the possible COVID-19 outbreak during the conference had social media profile pictures of themselves wearing masks. The extent of the virus's spread during the four-day party event in Chicago last week is currently unknown. For the convention, tens of thousands of people gathered in the Windy City. The United Center, the location of the major speeches, can hold roughly 20,000 people, although a precise head count was not immediately available, as quoted in a report by The New York Post.

How social media influencers plan their investments
Indian gaming influencers seek the stars, but it’s a tricky upward trek India’s ₹2,344 crore influencer market is expected to reach ₹3,375 crore by 2026, growing at a compound annual growth rate of 18%, according to the ‘State of Influencer Marketing in India’ report by consulting firm EY. The career is unpredictable, with longevity being a significant worry like most other entertainment and sports-related careers. “Volatility in their inflows makes them concerned about their shelf life, and while they are making money, they want to save meaningfully," said Jethwani.

Political thinking has become an unattractive career choice in free India
Lamenting on how the “river of ideas that nourished politics has dried up" in independent India, Yogendra Yadav draws attention to “the atrophy of the political imagination...that afflicts the entire political class, cutting across ideological and political boundaries." In his recent column in the Indian Express, the analyst-cum-activist asks, “Where are our political thinkers?" Well, quite a number of our most talented and ambitious young people are responding to economic incentives and pursuing careers in industry, technology and business. Our education system smothers thinking of any kind and our political discourse has long been hostile to free thinking. It comes as no surprise to me that a free, independent India produces fewer political thinkers than Olympic medallists.

Biden-Harris administration pressured Meta to censor Covid content, Zuckerberg tells House Committee
Meta Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg, in a letter to the House Judiciary Committee has alleged that the Biden-Harris administration «repeatedly pressurised» Meta's teams to censor posts related to Covid. He further said that the platform had to make some changes, that «with the benefit of hindsight and new information,» they won't make today. Zuckerberg also said he 'regrets' not being «more outspoken» about it. «In 2021, senior officials from the Biden Administration, including the White House, repeatedly pressured our teams for months to censor certain COVID-19 content, including humor and satire, and expressed a lot of frustration with our teams when we didn't agree. Ultimately, it was our decision whether or not to take content down, and we own our decisions, including COVID-19-related changes we made to our enforcement in the wake of this pressure,» Zuckerberg said in the letter.

Kolkata medic rape-murder case: War of words break out between BJP & TMC over 'dancing girl' in alleged protest video
TMC and BJP on Monday engaged in a war of words after TMC MP Saket Gokhale shared an alleged video of a girl dancing in a 'protest for RG Kar'. Taking to social media platform X, Gokhale shared a video of a girl dancing in the backdrop of posters that read 'justice for our sister'. He accused the BJP of hijacking a protest for political agendas. «Sickening! This is allegedly from a “protest for RG Kar” organized by BJP in Bengal. Is THIS BJP’s idea of “respecting women”? Creepy BJP misogynists hijacked a protest for political agendas with ZERO concern for the victim or any woman,» Gokhale stated.

Youngsters without political background entering politics will strengthen democracy: PM Modi
Narendra Modi asserted on Sunday that a lot of things are happening in India in the 21st century which are strengthening the foundation for a 'Viksit Bharat'. In his monthly 'Mann Ki Baat' broadcast, he said his Independence Day call for one lakh youth without any political background to join politics has evoked wide reactions and urged the youngsters to enter public life for a developed India and stronger democracy. Countless people from all walks of life joined the freedom movement even though they had no political background, he noted. «They devoted themselves entirely to India's independence. Today, to achieve the vision of a Viksit Bharat, we need to rekindle that same spirit once again,» he said.

Bigger intention of grabbing land, threatening Assamese identity behind crimes against women: CM
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has claimed that the recent incidents of crimes against women in the state are being committed with a «bigger intention of grabbing land and threatening the identity of the Assamese people». He hinted at 'political patronage' behind the crimes, while also claiming that financial power is shifting out of the hands of the Assamese people. «No society is perfect. Crimes against women are a reality. These crimes had come down in the state in the last three years. But the real intention in the recent incidents is much bigger, through crimes such as rape the target is our land, civilisation,» Sarma said at a press interaction late on Saturday evening. «In Assam, this design is on for the last 30-35 years. That is why the Assam Agitation happened. We have identified the radicals now, but in 1975 itself, the Assamese society was warned that this would happen,» he said, referring to the six-year-long movement from 1979 against illegal immigrants from Bangladesh.

How JD Vance found his way to the Catholic church
JD Vance would go to St. Gertrude to meet the friar. It was a fitting place for the millennial aspiring politician, who was drawn to the Catholic Church's ancient ways. For years he had flirted with joining the church. Now he wanted to explore the desire in earnest. St. Gertrude Church was led by the Dominican Friars from the Province of St. Joseph, part of a religious order founded in 1216. Its sanctuary smelled of incense but felt modern, its concrete walls pierced with bright stained-glass rectangles in reds and blues.
