BJP ally JDU, opposition MPs seek discussion on caste census with Home Ministry officials
Caste census was the predominant issue raised by the Opposition members at the first meeting of the parliamentary panel on the welfare of OBCs, with BJP ally JDU supporting their demand to call Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) officials to gather more information on OBCs, sources said. Incidentally, Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India is the head of the census organisation, which operates under MHA — necessitating the presence of ministry officials at the meet. At the first meeting of the panel, which was reconstituted earlier this month and headed by BJP MP Ganesh Singh, DMK floor leader in the Lok Sabha, TR Baalu, raised the caste census issue. He was supported by Congress Manickam Tagore and Trinamool Congress' Kalyan Banerjee. JDU's Giridhari Yadav also supported the demand.

Reading is a first world activity
reading — by which we mean book-size, long-form, anything lengthier than your 4-5 thumb scrolldowns — is not for everyone. While at any earlier age, reading beyond mashed-up info and opinions formed a bulk of the literate person's entertainment and information-gathering, now we have other far-quicker, more effective modes of uptake.

Credible media important for qualitative transformation of democracy: Nitin Gadkari
Union Minister Nitin Gadkari on Thursday said credible media is important for the qualitative transformation of democracy and socio-economic development of the country. Addressing an event here, Gadkari said every politician expects media support, but the media should support what is good for democracy and the country. He noted that once upon a time, people were only dependent on print media and electronic media, now they are dependent on social media. «In media, what we need is credibility, goodwill...people are expecting information from the media by which they can make the qualitative transformation of our democracy,» the minister said.

Telegram CEO’s arrest is a moment of social media reckoning
The recent arrest of Telegram founder and Chief Executive Officer Pavel Durov near Paris has sent shockwaves through the tech world. Elon Musk called on France to “free Pavel" to avert a threat to democracy; Paul Graham, the co-founder of leading Silicon Valley accelerator Y Combinator, suggested it would hurt the country’s chances of being “a major startup hub." Yet, while some are citing a French-led assault on free speech and innovation, the reality is more nuanced.
