Labour ministry urges states to include unorganised workers under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana
ministry of labour and employment has written to all state governments urging them to include migrant workers, building workers, beedi workers, cine workers, non-coal mine workers, contract labourers, and other unorganised workers under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY). This comes after the union cabinet recently approved the extension of the PMAY for an additional five years, from FY 2024-25 to 2028-29, with the aim of providing two crore additional houses to eligible beneficiaries, the ministry said in a statement issued on Tuesday. According to the statement, the ministry is of the view that these workers represent a disadvantaged section of society and ensuring their coverage under PMAY is not only a matter of social justice but also a necessary step towards improving their living conditions.

SME market like a casino? Sebi should talk it down & regulate only in case of fraud: Sunil Subramaniam
Sunil Subramaniam, Market Expert, says that speculation is part of a healthy capital market. It is only when you have these speculative entities like these people come in, that there is liquidity in the market. But if you regulate them and take them out, overall as a market, the liquidity is going to shrink. Should the regulator step in on the valuations? Subramaniam thinks that is right because there is no golden rule on what should be the right valuation. The market is the best determinant. So, unless there is clear evidence of fraud, some price fixing, rigging, or some false news put across which makes the share price go up, Sebi shouldn’t put in any regulation. The SME market is almost like a casino now. It does not feel like a stock market. Sunil Subramaniam: I fully agree with you. The reason for this is also related to the rampant futures and options situation. Demat accounts are going up. Post-COVID, youth with a lot of time on their hands, armed with internet and technology hands, are treating the stock market like a gambling den. There are no two ways about it. We do not have other options for gambling. We can see similar kinds of success when it comes to Dream11 and those kinds of sports-related apps. Despite all Sebi restrictions, financial influencers (fin fluencers) play a big part. It is like a get-rich-quick scheme. Booking gains from these IPOs show their intent. They are not investors. They are speculators.

Caste census: Will Modi try and hijack another Congress guarantee, asks Jairam Ramesh
Narendra Modi 'hijack' another of Congress' guarantees, the party's general secretary in-charge communications, Jairam Ramesh, asked on September 3 with respect to the ongoing debate around caste census. In may be noted here that the debate over caste census continues to stir political discourse in India, highlighting the complexities of addressing historically marginalised communities while balancing social welfare and electoral strategy. The Congress questioned whether Modi will take up the mantle of conducting a caste census after the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) indicated no objection to it, provided the data is used for welfare and not politics. This inquiry comes after the RSS's statement on Monday during a three-day coordination conclave in Palakkad, Kerala, where it addressed the sensitive nature of caste-related issues for Hindu society.

Mint Primer: Are ghost jobs spooking the job hunt for Indians?
Mint explains the trend and why companies resort to such tactics. Ghost jobs are vacancies posted by companies across various sectors, either on job portals or their company websites. They look like real vacancies but here’s the catch: there is no urgent need to fill these positions.

Are you wealthy? Do you have money? Tim Walz could take away your money if he is elected VP; here's how
Tim Walz made Minnesota one of the most progressive states in the union by enacting a plethora of tax cuts, credits, and rebates for low- and middle-class families and moderate tax hikes on the wealthy. But if the Harris-Walz Administration ticket wins the election, what consequences would his progressive policies have for the wealthy across the country? For insight on how Walz's five policies could affect the wealthy if he becomes the Vice President, the economists Stan V. Smith, Ph.D., President of Smith Economics Group, LTD. in Chicago, and Michael Collins, CFA, Founder & CEO of WinCap Financial in Boston, have provided comprehensive analysis.

Alexandre de Moraes: All about the judge who banned Elon Musk's X erstwhile Twitter in Brazil
Elon Musk, who is now fighting to maintain his social media platform X in one of the biggest democracies in the world, made the disparaging comparison to the Harry Potter character. It makes sense that Alexandre de Moraes would be compared to Voldemort given his dark, piercing gaze and shiny bald head. Mr.

Don’t think 20-30% return is a birthright; time to go long on gold and neutral weight on equity: Nilesh Shah
Nilesh Shah, MD, Kotak AMC, says investors can’t go to Russia because of Ukraine; to China because of Taiwan; to South Africa because of social strife, or to Brazil because of the communist government. In the emerging market, there are very limited choices and India is one bright option. So with Triveni Sangam of flows, fundamentals, and sentiment, the downside is limited but expect volatility over the next 3, 6, 9, and 12 months. Shah also says this is the time when you should be long duration because rates are going to be cut. You should be long gold because central banks are buying gold. And you should be neutral weight to equity with some bias towards large caps. Sensex and Nifty are once again hitting record highs every day, even when there are worries about not-so-great Q1 earnings. Where do you think we are headed? Nilesh Shah: If we take a 5-year, 10-year view, no doubt the only direction is up. The economy will do well and markets will do well. If you are taking a 3, 6, 9, or 12-month view, I have no idea where we are headed. On one side, we believe the correction in the market will be shallow and short-term because there is Triveni Sangam of fundamentals, flows, and sentiment.

Kamala Harris is winning against Donald Trump in second US presidential debate 2024, predicts new poll
Kamala Harris is leading over Donald Trump in the opinion polls ahead of the US election 2024, as per a report. According to ABC News/Ipsos poll, the Democratic Presidential nominee has maintained healthy lead over Republican challenger. Harris is also predicted (43 per cent-37 per cent) to win the September 10 Presidential debate against Trump. Donald Trump said on last Tuesday he had «reached an agreement» for a September 10 debate with Kamala Harris, two days after he threatened to pull out — although there was no confirmation from the US vice president that a deal had been struck. Trump posted on his Truth Social platform that the rivals had agreed that the ABC showdown would run under the same rules as CNN's June 27 debate, with no studio audience and each candidate's microphone muted when the other is speaking.

Focus is on ramping up physical, digital and social infrastructure, says Ashwini Vaishnaw
India's growth is driven by investment in infrastructure, inclusive development, manufacturing, and simplification of laws, said Ashwini Vaishnaw, union minister for electronics and information technology, information and broadcasting, and railways. When it comes to infrastructure, the government is investing not just in physical and digital assets but social resources as well, he said at the Economic Times World Leaders Forum on Saturday. Medical colleges for example have nearly doubled to 706 in the last 10 years, while the number of premier All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) have gone to 22 from seven, he said Vaishnaw. On the manufacturing side of things, a key driver of new jobs, Vaishnaw said the government is focusing on creating new industries through programmes such as production-linked incentive (PLI) schemes. The PLI for mobile phone manufacturing has generated 1.2 million direct and indirect jobs in the past decade, he said. The total production value of mobile phones manufactured in India has risen from $2.3 billion in 2014 to $50 billion in 2024, he said.
