How Delhi can learn from Beijing & London to combat air pollution
As a Tsinghua University graduate student in Beijing, I couldn't help but reflect on how the city had faced a similar crisis not too long ago. Its infamous 'airpocalypse' seemed overwhelming. Yet, Beijing transformed its skies from grey to blue, setting a compelling blueprint for reform. Cities like Beijing — and London — have shown that with political will, change is possible. Beijing reduced PM2.5 levels by over 50% between 2013 and 2017. A 3-year action plan, 'Blue Sky War', targeted pollution at its source. Coal consumption was reduced through cleaner natural gas, shutting down coal-fired plants and relocating polluting industries. Stricter emission standards were enforced for vehicles and factories, alongside aggressive EV promotion and public transport subsidies.

Indian cenbank asks lenders to cut speculative bets against rupee, sources say
Indian central bank, in a rare move, instructed some banks to cut their long positions on the dollar-rupee pair on Friday, seeking to reduce speculative bets on the local currency, which is at a record low, four bankers directly familiar with the development told Reuters. The rupee weakened to a record low of 84.5075 per U.S. dollar earlier in the day, pressured by portfolio outflows and a stronger greenback. Foreign investors have sold a net of $3.1 billion in Indian equities so far in November, after selling a record $11.2 billion in October, putting pressure on the rupee. On Thursday, after U.S. prosecutors indicted Adani Group's billionaire founder, Gautam Adani, over alleged bribery and fraud, foreign investors sold $600 million. Provisional data suggests selling continued on Friday, with net sales of $150 million.

Competition regulator unlikely to take cognizance of media reports on Adani bribery issue
Competition Commission of India (CCI) Chairperson Ravneet Kaur on Friday hinted that the fair trade regulator is not likely to take cognizance of media reports on the bribery charge against the Adani group to initiate a probe, claiming that the panel takes steps only after some information is filed before it. Billionaire Gautam Adani has been charged by US prosecutors for allegedly being part of a scheme to pay over USD 250 million (about Rs 2,100 crore) bribe to Indian officials in exchange for favourable terms for solar power contracts. Adani group on Thursday denied the charges of paying bribes to secure favourable terms for solar power contracts, saying the allegations by US prosecutors are baseless and the conglomerate is compliant with all laws. On whether the Adani matter falls under the purview of CCI, Kaur said, «The CCI is governed by the Competition Act… It is meant to promote and sustain competition. If there is any matter which falls in that domain of the Competition Act, then it comes to Competition Commission.»

As rations become strained, astronauts Butch Wilmore and Sunita Williams stranded on ISS are surviving on soup made from their own wastes
ISS, astronauts are subsisting on soup prepared from their own urine. As rations get tight, NASA astronauts Butch Wilmore and Sunita Williams, who have been trapped in space since June, are subsisting on recycled pee soup; however, their rescue mission isn't scheduled until 2025, as quoted in a report by the Daily Star. After surviving on soup made from their recycled urine, the astronauts who became stranded on the International Space Station have raised concerns about weight loss. When they departed in June, Butch Wilmore, 61, and Sunita Williams, 59, were only expected to be in space for eight days. However, they were left stranded when the Boeing Starliner aircraft that was meant to return them to Earth experienced thruster problems and helium leaks, making a manned return journey too risky.

Nuke talk: Is Vladimir Putin bluffing, or does he mean it?
Vladimir Putin by firing American and British long-range missiles into Russia. In response, Russia fired a nucelar-capable missile into Ukraine, the first such attack in the war. Russia blames the West for the recent escalation as the US and the UK have permitted Ukraine to fire their missiles into Russia, something Russia considers crossing of a red line. The US blames Russia for escalation. It says it allowed Ukraine to use its long-range ATACMS missiles because Russia has started fielding North Korean troops. No doubt, the war is escalating after several occurrings in rapid succession, including Putin lowering Russia's nuclear threshold. However, with Donald Trump set to take over as the President of the US after two months, the conflict is likely to resolve since he has said he would end the war.
