This year, voter turnout reached a record 67.74 per cent, the highest since the state's formation in 2000. A total of 1,211 candidates are contesting, including BJP's Babulal Marandi in Dhanwar and JMM's Speaker Rabindra Nath Mahato in Nala.
The first key seat to watch is Barhait, where Chief Minister Hemant Soren from JMM is contesting against BJP's Gamaliyan Hembrom. Soren won this seat with a large margin in 2019, and his victory is considered crucial for his political fortunes.
In Gandey, Hemant Soren’s wife, Kalpana (JMM), is facing BJP's Muniya Devi. Kalpana won a by-election in 2024 with 109,827 votes, defeating BJP’s Dilip Verma, and her contest is seen as a significant one for the ruling alliance.
Chandankiyari is another seat to watch, where BJP's Leader of Opposition Amar Kumar Bauri faces JMM's Umakant Rajak, a former AJSU member who switched parties. The outcome here will be important for both the BJP and JMM's bid for influence in the Bokaro region.
