Ukraine's Zelenskyy says only US green light on NATO invitation will sway reluctant Germany
NATO — is not welcome by some key Western partners, in particular Germany. Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russia was also likely looking at the postelection scenario in the US to assess the possibility of cease-fire talks with Ukraine. He assessed that if partial cease-fire deals could be reached over attacks on energy infrastructure and Black Sea shipping routes, it would signal the end of the «hot phase» of the war. Zelenskyy spoke to journalists on Monday and his comments were embargoed until Tuesday. On NATO, Zelenskyy said France, Britain and Italy have shown signs of support. Germany has reservations, however, and Zelenskyy believes only a US green light will convince Berlin to accept the idea.

Who is Lidia Thorpe and why did the Indigenous Australian senator heckle King Charles?
Lidia Thorpe interrupted King Charles during a parliamentary reception on his visit to Australia, shouting accusations of historical wrongs committed against Indigenous Australians. «You committed genocide against our people. Give us our land back. Give us what you stole from us—our bones, our skulls, our babies, our people,» Thorpe declared, according to a viral video that captured the event. The 51-year-old senator was quickly escorted out by security personnel. Thorpe’s actions sent shockwaves through Parliament, where many lawmakers and dignitaries were present. Former Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott, who attended the event, referred to the senator’s outburst as «unfortunate political exhibitionism.» Later, Thorpe defended her actions, telling the BBC, «To be sovereign, you have to be of the land. He is not of this land.»

France extends internal border controls until April 2025; What travellers to Schengen area need to know
France has announced its decision to maintain internal border controls until April 30, 2025, due to heightened terrorist threats and concerns over irregular migration. The French authorities formally notified the European Commission that border controls with neighboring Schengen countries—Belgium, Spain, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Germany, and Italy—will not conclude on October 31, 2024, as initially scheduled. The extension follows the country's ongoing concerns over public safety. France's current border control measures will end on October 31, 2024, and a new set of controls will take effect from November 1, 2024. The decision comes amid threats related to terrorist activities, the presence of criminal networks involved in illegal migration, and migration flows that could potentially include radicalized individuals.

Three Mile Island nuclear plant in Pennsylvania have sat dormant for so long that grass has sprung up in the towers' hollowed-out bases and wildlife roam inside. Armed guard stations at an entrance to the shut concrete facility, surrounded by barbed wire, sit empty. The plant, which would run so loud when operating that workers were required to wear hearing protection, is nearly silent. «It's still eerie walking in here and it's, just, quiet,» Constellation regulatory assurance manager Craig Smith said during a tour of the plant last week. Smith, who worked at Three Mile Island when Constellation shut the site's remaining reactor in 2019, is now preparing for a restart.
