RG Kar rape-murder: No outcome as West Bengal Chief Secretary sppeals to junior doctors to end hunger strike
Bengal Chief Secretary on Monday urged the agitating junior doctors to withdraw their hunger strike stating that seven of their ten demands have been met, and expressed concern over their health condition. However, the protest continued even after Chief Secretary Manoj Pant held a meeting with different senior doctors' associations, including the Indian Medical Association (IMA), on Monday. Meanwhile, the West Bengal Junior Doctor's Front (WBJDF) held a Raj Bhawan 'abhijaan' (march) on Monday and submitted a deputation to Governor CV Ananda Bose, seeking justice for the deceased doctor who was raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College & Hospital on August 9. At least 12 doctors' organisations met the state administration, led by the chief secretary, home secretary and other senior health officials, at the Health Department Swasthya Bhawan. WBJDF members were not present at the meeting even as the fast-unto-death protest taken up by WBJDF at Esplanade entered the tenth day on Monday.

First stage of anti-pollution plan activated in Delhi-NCR
pollution control panel for Delhi-NCR on Monday directed state governments in the region to implement the first stage of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) as the capital's air quality was in the 'poor' category for the second consecutive day. The Stage I of GRAP, a set of winter-specific anti-pollution measures, focuses on controlling pollution through dust mitigation at construction sites, proper waste management, and regular road cleaning. It mandates strict checks on polluting vehicles, better traffic management, and emission controls in industries, power plants, and brick kilns. The first stage also bans open burning of waste, limits the use of diesel generators, and prohibits the use of coal or firewood in eateries. According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), Delhi's 24-hour average air quality index stood at 234 (poor category) as of 4 pm on Monday.

Car sales in India: Slow start in FY25 but festive season boost expected
Car sales in the first half of the fiscal year has been slower than expected, but with the onset of the festive season demand is expected to gain momentum helping bringing down stocks in the network, Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) Shailesh Chandra said. As per data available with the industry body, sales of cars, sedans and utility vehicles went up by a modest 0.5% to 2,081,143 units between April and September FY25, signalling a weakening of demand in the third largest automobile market in the world. Passenger vehicle sales in India rose by 8.4% to a record 4.22 million units in FY24. Chandra said, “The expectation was slightly better than (sales growth being) flattish. While April was good, sales in May and June did not play out as per expectation, which impacted industry volumes adversely. In September too, two weeks of Shraddh (considered by consumers as inauspicious for making purchases) affected retails. But now with the start of festival period, sales on-ground seem to be doing well.”

National Insurance Company picks out assets to sell amid poor solvency
National Insurance Company, which is grappling with a severe solvency shortfall of ₹8,000 crore, with its solvency margin standing at a negative 0.49%, far below the regulatory minimum of 1.5%, has identified several key assets to address the gap, according to people familiar with the matter. Among these are its stake in Agriculture Insurance Company, a 20% stake in India International Insurance Singapore valued at about $500 million (about ₹4,000 crore) and a joint venture in Kenya, they said, adding that though the insurer has identified these assets, it is yet to start the process and seek necessary approvals to proceed with any sales. While the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (Irdai) has granted the company forbearance and it has no immediate pressure to liquidate assets, the insurer is hopeful that the transition to a risk-based capital framework, expected in the coming few quarters, would provide relief by improving the valuation of its assets, according to the people.

Only practising Hindus should be appointed to temple committees, no politicians: VHP to Andhra govt
VHP) on Monday said only "practising Hindus" should be appointed to temple committees in Andhra Pradesh and there should be no political representation in these panels. It also demanded that only «practising Hindus» be appointed as employees at these temples and the «non-Hindus or non-practising Hindus» appointed as temple staff immediately relieved of their duties. «Politicians during their election campaigns not only say that they are secular and treat all the religions equally but also participate in prayer programmes in different religious places of worship,» the VHP said in a statement. «In this case, if there are political leaders in the temple committees, there is a possibility that they will give priority to their secular feelings rather than the welfare of Hindus,» it added.
