Delhi CEO compares Bengaluru's startup scene to Kota's JEE craze in 2005. Check four reasons behind it
Bangalore's current startup ecosystem and Kota, the coaching hub for IIT JEE aspirants in 2005. He refers to this as the "ecosystem delusion," where an environment rich in resources and networking opportunities can sometimes create a false sense of achievement among its participants. He listed four reasons why a «Bengaluru today reminds him of Kota of 2005». In Kota, thousands of students flocked to the city, assuming that merely being in the same place as the top achievers, attending the same coaching classes, and having access to the best resources would guarantee their success. However, only a small fraction of them actually cleared the IIT JEE, while the majority fell into the trap of complacency—believing that proximity to success was the same as putting in the hard work required to achieve it. In his post, Deshpande referred to Kota as the «Mecca of IIT-JEE,» highlighting that it fosters a well-crafted environment for success. «Each year, one coaching institute alone produces around 4-5 top rankers with single digits. Students have access to exceptional teachers, the finest books, and an infrastructure designed to promote success—everything from mess facilities to photocopy shops and rental PGs,» he explained.

Bharat Dojo Yatra coming soon: Rahul shares video of martial arts sessions during Nyay Yatra
Rahul Gandhi on Thursday shared a video on martial arts sessions held at campsites of his east to west Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra earlier this year and said a "Bharat Dojo Yatra" is coming soon. Dojo broadly refers to a training hall or school for martial arts. «During the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, as we journeyed across thousands of kilometers, we had a daily routine of practicing jiu-jitsu every evening at our campsite. What began as a simple way to stay fit quickly evolved into a community activity, bringing together fellow yatris and young martial arts students from the towns where we stayed,» Gandhi said on X along with the video of the sessions. «Our goal was to introduce these young minds to the beauty of the 'Gentle Art' a harmonious blend of meditation, Jiu-Jitsu, Aikido, and non-violent conflict resolution techniques,» the leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha said.

Amid cautious hiring, internship becomes mandatory and extended
companies are increasingly insisting that freshers undergo mandatory internships with them for an extended period before they make the final offers, delaying the hiring process that has just started seeing some activity after a washout year. Placement officers in several tier-1 and -2 engineering colleges that ET spoke to said internships, which used to be six months, have now been extended by another four-six months. “Employers are increasingly seeking fresh graduates with internship experience in AI/ML, data roles, model development and analytics,” said Munira Loliwala, vice president, strategy and growth, at staffing services firm TeamLease Digital. “The shortage of skilled entry-level talent has led companies to offer extended internships, enhancing the likelihood of hiring through management trainee programs later.”

The bank doubling graduate recruitment, eschewing 80-hour weeks, espousing remote work
When students contemplate their ideal banking employer, it's not usually BNY. This is partly because BNY hasn't historically been a big hirer of graduates globally, but is also because BNY is a custody house rather than an investment bank. — It doesn't offer prestigious jobs inM&A and sales and trading; it does offer jobs relating to custody.

Lessons from my relationship manager quitting….again
A few days ago, I received a message from my relationship manager informing me that she had left the private sector bank where I hold my primary account. This wasn’t the first time something like this happened. Since 2008, I’ve had relationship managers come and go, with each one lasting around two years before moving on.

Political thinking has become an unattractive career choice in free India
Lamenting on how the “river of ideas that nourished politics has dried up" in independent India, Yogendra Yadav draws attention to “the atrophy of the political imagination...that afflicts the entire political class, cutting across ideological and political boundaries." In his recent column in the Indian Express, the analyst-cum-activist asks, “Where are our political thinkers?" Well, quite a number of our most talented and ambitious young people are responding to economic incentives and pursuing careers in industry, technology and business. Our education system smothers thinking of any kind and our political discourse has long been hostile to free thinking. It comes as no surprise to me that a free, independent India produces fewer political thinkers than Olympic medallists.

Lazard interns' gentle time illustrates alleged issue converting summer internships
It's not clear whether Anna McFadzean, a London School of Economics student and summer intern at Lazard, has converted her 2024 internship into a full-time job offer. Nor is it clear whether Arshiya, an intern in the FIG team, has. However, Lazard has featured them both in the day in the life video below. It illustrates why summer internships in investment banking jobs aren't always the reliable routes to first jobs that they used to be.
