England's Manu Tuilagi to miss start of Six Nations after groin injury
Manu Tuilagi will be absent from the initial stages of the Six Nations as a result of a groin injury sustained during Sale's Premiership triumph over Saracens last week. During the second half of the match, Tuilagi had to exit prematurely, and subsequent assessments have indicated a six-week rehabilitation period, ruling out the necessity for surgery.

Mass exodus in Central Gaza as IDF advances
A Palestinian journalist posted pictures of Israeli tanks near a mosque in a built-up area of Bureij which had apparently advanced from orchards on the eastern outskirts. Further south, Israeli forces struck the area around a hospital in the heart of Khan Younis, the Gaza Strip's main southern city, where residents feared a new ground push into territory crowded with families made homeless in 12 weeks of war. Palestinian health authorities said 210 people were confirmed killed in Israeli strikes in the past 24 hours, raising the toll of the war to 21,320 dead — nearly 1 percent of the enclave's population. Thousands more dead are feared to be buried or lost in the ruins. Israel has escalated its ground war in Gaza sharply since just before Christmas despite public pleas from its closest ally the United States to scale the campaign down in the closing weeks of the year. It launched the war to destroy the Hamas movement that runs Gaza after fighters rampaged through Israeli towns on Oct.

Kirsten Dunst, Wagner Moura, Cailee Spaeny, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Sonoya Mizuno, Jesse Plemons, and Nick Offerman lead the cast in a film immersing audiences in the intensity of a fresh American civil conflict. The trailer picks with glimpses of widespread destruction and news announcements declaring the secession of «19 states.”

Which are the midcap and smallcap funds that look good for 2024? Nirav Karkera answers
Nirav Karkera, Head of Research, Fisdom, says: “I am not quite sure if 2024-25 will actually turn out to be the year of passives per se but definitely largecaps are expected to make a comeback. But at the same time, it is not expected to make a comeback at the cost of small and midcaps. So, there are a few good things that have been going in favour of small- and midcaps as a segment and we expect a lot of this to be carried forward into the New Year as well.” Before I ask you how you think midcap and smallcaps would be faring in 2024, let's just analyze the performance in 2023 where we have seen Nifty Small-Cap growing beyond 40%, Nifty Mid-Cap close to 38%, beating Nifty-50. Also, midcap and smallcap funds have given returns beyond 35%. It has been said that 2024 and 2025 are going to be years of passive funds and specifically focusing on large cap category. But then what is going to be the trajectory of midcaps and smallcaps going ahead? Nirav Karkera: Definitely one thing that is very clear that largecaps are once again gaining a lot of investor favour and investor interest and this comes on the back of a very stellar run-up in the mid- and smallcap segments. In fact, the run-up has been so good that it has pushed many investors to the edge of their seats, worried about what lies ahead after such a rally. Does it fizzle out from here or what is it that can keep the rally sustaining going ahead?

Working target for Nifty@22,300; focus on 5 sectors now: Gautam Shah
Gautam Shah, Founder & Chief Strategist, Goldilocks Premium Research, says “now our high conviction bet is SBI. It can do something special in 2024 if you want to just pick one stock among the largecaps. So given this view, banking as a space should do well and that should keep the entire market safe. You know, if the banks are strong, the Nifty is strong. If the Nifty is strong, generally the entire market is steady.” Shah further says: «On the Nifty itself, our working target is about 22,300. As we get close to that number, it might make sense to take some profits off the table and maybe work with a trailing stop-loss of 21,200 or even, if somebody's comfortable, 20,900. So while the index might not be so relevant right now, there are opportunities in a lot of sectors, banks, IT, pharma, metals, infra, power where one should focus on without looking at the index much.» Looking at your latest report, it says a new high is quite a feat. But going by what you have put out in the report, you are talking about the Nifty Bank and IT sector batting for the bulls and therefore it becomes easy for the Nifty to rally. So given the kind of rally that we have seen at 21,700 levels, is that going to only sustain as per your analysis? Gautam Shah: Well, when we put out the message that new highs being quite a feat, we meant after what happened last Wednesday because there was so much talk and chatter around the market fall of a single day.

Interim Budget must put India quickly back on fiscal glidepath if it derails
Interim Budget: India's fiscal deficit might surpass the government's 5.9% target for FY24 due to escalated revenue expenses and a lower-than-expected nominal GDP, according to India Ratings and Research. The agency predicts that despite increased tax and non-tax revenue, an anticipated second supplementary demand for grants could escalate the deficit to 6% of GDP, slightly exceeding the budgeted limit. “Higher-than-budgeted revenue expenditure triggered through the first and likely second supplementary demand for grants in combination with lower-than-budgeted nominal GDP will push the fiscal deficit to 6.0% of GDP, 10bp higher than budgeted 5.9%,” said Ind-Ra researchers. While announcing the federal budget for this fiscal year, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said India aims to narrow the fiscal gap to 5.9% of gross domestic product from 6.4% in the last financial year. There are mushrooming speculations that the Narendra Modi-led government will soon have to unleash various fiscal measures and particularly so as to rein in galloping inflation rate. India's fiscal deficit for the first seven months of this fiscal year through October stood at 8.037 lakh crore rupees, or 45% of annual estimates, government data showed today. The fiscal deficit marginally narrowed from 45.6% reported in the comparable year-earlier period.

Budget 2024: 10 experts share what they expect from the coming Budget
Budget 2024: What will the market look for in Vote on Account? Mint collated the views of 10 experts on what they expect from the upcoming Budget. Here's what they said: The Budget will largely be a non-event as it will be a Vote on Account and hence largely a report card with the election commission not permitting any major announcements on account of the ensuing general elections. That being said the fiscal numbers are likely to be in line with the budget estimates.
