DGCA proposes stricter norms for wet-leased plane operations by Indian airlines
Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) on Thursday proposed stricter norms for the oversight of wet-leased planes operated by Indian airlines. Faced with the grounding of a significant number of planes due to engine and supply chain woes, domestic carriers are utilising more wet-leased aircraft as a short-term measure to cater to rising air traffic demand. The watchdog has issued a draft for public consultation on the revised Civil Aviation Requirements (CAR) on wet/damp lease operations by Indian operators to strengthen the regulatory framework for safety oversight of wet/damp lease operations. Wet lease of an aircraft by an Indian carrier involves the leasing of foreign aircraft, along with crew, maintenance and insurance. The plane is also under the operational control of the foreign operator (lessor) and subject to regulatory requirements of the foreign civil aviation authority concerned.

Alberta men receive 6.5-year prison sentences for Coutts border protest
Coutts, Alta.Anthony Olienick showed no emotion while Chris Carbert appeared glum and folded his arms, as the sentence was read out in Court of King’s Bench on Monday.Neither are to serve their full sentences, as Justice David Labrenz gave them nearly four years credit for time they have already spent in custody. Both were convicted of mischief and possession of a firearm dangerous to the public peace, while Olienick was also found guilty of possession of a pipe bomb.A jury found them not guilty of the most serious charge they faced — conspiracy to murder police officers at the blockade. The blockade halted traffic at the border crossing for two weeks in 2022 in a protest of COVID-19 rules and vaccine mandates. The men were charged after RCMP found guns, ammunition and body armour in trailers near the blockade.Labrenz said while the men believed their cause just, they can’t be allowed to take the law into their own hands.“Both Olienick and Carbert used the blockade as a last stand against police,” the judge said in his sentencing decision.“(They) knew they were actively participating in something that was illegal, but they didn’t care because they thought their cause had been worthy.”He added, “The law does not allow people to take the law into their own hands.“Both men bear a high degree of moral culpability.”Olienick and Carbert have been in custody since they were arrested in February 2022.Prior to sentencing, they were given a chance to address the court.Carbert declined, but Olienick said he is a better man as a result of his time in custody.“It has given me time to indulge in God’s work,” he said, reading from a prepared statement.“I will continue to help others.”Olienick was given six years for possession for the

Manu Joseph: Why Indian cities may be doomed to remain unliveable
As an Indian, my standards are so low that my idea of exciting urban development is a Nitin Gadkari tweet. I enjoy reading the plans of the minister for road transport and highways—his great projects, how he would punish Indians who don’t follow the law (this part especially), how he hopes to replace vehicular horns with the sound of Indian musical instruments, and how very soon road travel from Chennai to Bangalore would take only two hours. I did try to point out to him on X that right now Bangalore to Bangalore is two hours.

After 'Tera baap deta hai kya gas' slap viral video, Bengaluru women share similar complaints against auto drivers
The Times of India, highlight the challenges women face when using ride-hailing services in the city. A 27-year-old professional recounted her ordeal, saying, “Three months ago, I was heading from Koramangala to Marathahalli around 10 pm. The driver complained about the traffic for over 15 minutes, and eventually asked me to get down unless I paid an additional Rs 50 to Rs 100, which I refused.” She further explained how the driver yelled continuously, forcing her to exit the auto. “It was already late, and I had to walk the rest of the way. I was scared the whole time,” she added. In a similar incident, Gowri, a 21-year-old student, booked an auto to a mall in Rajajinagar. “The driver took a long route, claiming there was traffic on the app-suggested way. He demanded more money and refused to leave until I paid double the fare,” she shared. Despite filing a complaint with the app, no action was taken.
