GenAI levels the playing field: Mercedes Soria of robotics security company Knightscope
artificial intelligence can enable Indians — even those who do not have a technical background — to solve the country’s most pressing problems, according to Mercedes Soria, executive vice-president and chief intelligence officer at US robotics security company Knightscope. “Now, all we have to worry about is, are we solving the right problem,” said Soria, who was on an India visit to share her expertise on machine learning and AI. Soria is a speaker for the United States Department of State on technology and women in STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics). “In the future, it’s not going to be so much that you have to be technical to have a startup and solve a problem. It’s going to be more of, do you identify the right problem to solve, and then the technology like Gen AI will help you,” she said. Problems can be solved even by those who can’t write a single line of code, she added. This is a ‘massive opportunity’ for India with its large population and unique local issues. Young people in India, including high schoolers, are very familiar with and using tools like ChatGPT, whereas in the US this is seen more among those in university, Soria noted.

For the first time King Charles says he lost his sense of taste amid his cancer treatment
King Charles III recently provided a rare update on his health during a visit with families in Southport who were affected by a tragic knife attack that claimed the lives of three children. When asked about his well-being amidst ongoing cancer treatment, the King responded with optimism, stating that he was doing “not too bad.” This marks a significant moment as Charles, who was diagnosed with an undisclosed form of cancer in February, has mostly kept his health details private, sharing only occasional updates, as per the reports of Yahoo entertainment.

Not UPenn or Georgetown, Barron Trump is heading to New York for college this fall
Barron Trump, the youngest child of Donald and Melania Trump, has decided to start his college career in New York this autumn, which is a big break from the Trump family's custom of going to Georgetown or the University of Pennsylvania. In an interview with the New York Post on August 20, 2024, the former president Donald Trump verified the information and said that Barron had chosen a «very good» school in New York. Trump did suggest that the information would be revealed shortly, but the precise institution is still unknown, as per the reports of Yahoo news. Barron, who stands out as the tallest in his family, reaching between 6-foot-7, has maintained a low profile, especially in recent months. Unlike his other family members, he did not attend the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee in July, where his half-niece, Kai Trump, made an appearance and shared her decision to attend the University of Miami. This low visibility extends to his upcoming college move-in, a rite of passage for many families, as it is unclear if his parents, Donald and Melania Trump, will be present for this event. Whether Barron will reside on or off-campus is also still unknown. Also Read: Beyoncé fails to appear at DNC, many Democrats particularly millenials are outraged

According to Donald Trump, this was the ‘nastiest speaker’ at DNC 2024, who is the person?
Kathy Hochul, the governor of New York, and her unbridled total hatred had no bounds. On Wednesday, Donald Trump disclosed his opinion of the nastiest speaker to have spoken at the DNC thus far. Hochul discussed her shared values of grit, determination, and compassion with presidential candidate Kamala Harris on August 19, the first night of the Democratic National Convention. The governor continued, saying that those principles have always defined New Yorkers. She stated that Donald Trump was a New Yorker by birth, but he turned out to be a liar, philanderer, and felon. New York had to suffer through Trump's 78 long years in office. Hochul criticised the fraud, the tax-dodging, the sham university, and the shady charities of Trump. Google agreed to pay millions for California news. Journalists call it a bad deal
Google will soon give California millions of dollars to help pay for local journalism jobs in a first-in-the-nation deal, but journalists and other media industry experts are calling it a disappointing agreement that mostly benefits the tech giant. The agreement, which was hashed out behind closed doors and announced this week, will direct tens of millions of public and private dollars to keep local news organisations afloat. Critics say it's a textbook political maneuver by tech giants to avoid a fee under what could have been groundbreaking legislation. California lawmakers agreed to kill a bill requiring tech to support news outlets they profit from in exchange for Google's financial commitment. By shelving the bill, the state effectively gave up on an avenue that could have required Google and social media platforms to make ongoing payments to publishers for linking news content, said Victor Pickard, professor of media policy and political economy at the University of Pennsylvania. California also left behind a much bigger amount of funding that could have been secured under the legislation, he said.

Why top CUET performers are facing admission issues at St Stephen’s
St Stephen's College through the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) are encountering uncertainty. Although they were allocated seats based on their CUET scores, the college has denied them admission. One student's allocation status says ‘verified by convener', but it hasn't been processed further. Another student says she was never given the fee payment link after allocation. On contacting the college, they were told the seats were already full. This has left the students, all high-scorers, and their families in a catch-22 situation as they are not able to opt for their second choice now. According to a senior university official, the number of such candidates is 22.

Maize a good candidate to replace paddy and wheat in Punjab: Ramesh Chand
Mint event, Chand said the government's policy think tank is working on a plan to identify certain high-value crops as replacements for paddy in Punjab, aiming to protect the environment while ensuring that farmers' incomes are not impacted. Rice cultivation is a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, particularly methane. Indian paddy fields emit about 3.3 million tonnes of methane annually, which accounts for around 10% of the country's total methane emissions.
