Silver prices surge to nearly Rs 90,000/kg, reaching all-time high
Silver prices Thursday surged to an all-time high, just shy of Rs 90,000 a kg, paced by an increase in industrial applications of the precious metal amid shortening odds of an imminent reduction in policy rates by the US Federal Reserve. Prices climbed more than Rs 2,000, or nearly 4%, through the course of a single trading session to end at Rs 87,476 a kg. Within a month, silver prices have climbed more than 5%, resulting in annualised gains of 60%, with analysts attributing increasing industrial demand of silver from the makers of electric vehicles (EV) and photovoltaic solar panels. High prices have sparked selling of household silver in Mumbai’s Zaveri Bazaar, said Prithviraj Kothari, MD, RiddiSiddhi Bullions. “People are selling bars, coins and silver utensils to get cash in hand. Also, after a long time, silver is witnessing such a bull run and consumers want to make the most of it,” said Kothari.

Man City bids to make history and Jurgen Klopp bids farewell as Premier League heads toward dramatic finale
Manchester City is bidding to make history. Jurgen Klopp is bidding farewell. The English Premier League is heading toward a dramatic and emotional finale on Sunday, with the title race between Man City — seeking an unprecedented fourth straight top-flight championship — and Arsenal going to the wire and taking centre stage on an afternoon when goals and tears usually flow. Many of those tears will likely come at Anfield where Klopp, the eccentric German who has bestrode the league for nearly nine years with his heavy-metal football and big grin, takes charge of his last game at Liverpool. Klopp is definitely leaving. For other managers, the future is more uncertain.

Electioneering at its peak but diesel sales slide, petrol almost flat
diesel sales continued to slide in May while petrol consumption was almost flat despite election campaigns for the general elections hitting a peak, preliminary data of state-owned firms showed on Thursday. Electioneering for general elections traditionally has led to a surge in fuel demand as candidates extensively use automobiles to reach voters. But the trend in sales by PSUs so far does not reflect that. Petrol sales of three state-owned firms, which control 90 per cent of the fuel market, at 1.367 million tonnes in the first half of May was almost the same as 1.36 million tonnes of fuel consumed in the same period last year. Month-on-month consumption however soared 11 per cent. Diesel sales dropped 1.1 per cent to 3.28 million tonnes during May 1 to 15. The demand for the nation's most consumed fuel had fallen 2.3 per cent in April and 2.7 per cent in March.
