If you encounter a technical glitch on your stock broking platform, here’s what you should do
stock broking app to place an order for Bank Nifty options, he was taken aback. “On 20 December, the broker’s app had a glitch when I placed some orders for a Bank Nifty option. The app didn’t show anything, whether my orders had been executed or rejected or were pending. My order book and position page didn’t get updated, nor did the funds page,” recounts Patil. Seeing his funds in place, Patil kept punching in his order, but nothing got updated. The order book and position tab got updated only a few minutes later, showing an open position, with a huge loss of Rs.37,000. Patil tried to exit that position, but the error kept recurring. Patil is not alone in his suffering. Today, more individuals are trading than ever before. A record number of investors have opened demat accounts in the past few years. A staggering 42 lakh new accounts were opened in December alone—50% higher than the previous month—taking the total number of demat accounts to 13.93 crore. The trading volume on stock exchanges has increased over tenfold since 2019-20. However, brokers are finding it tough to handle this frenetic activity. In recent months, users of several broking platforms have been crying foul after facing recurring outages and disruption in services. Uphill battle for users

The many flawed equity investing rules of retail investors that don't stand up to scrutiny when it comes to earning real returns
equity for a long period of time will have personal experience to vouch for the simple approach of holding a diversified portfolio that is managed to weed out losers. For everyone else, such advice is simply theory. This is because they have made their own rules. Everyone who has dabbled in equity investing has had good and bad experiences. They deem these to be their best teachers. The lessons are shared with others, who also draw similar conclusions. The commonality of experience is enough, in many cases, to overtly generalise. Many rules are formed in this manner and usually narrated with great conviction. This one ranks at the top: one must not be greedy, and one must book profits. This position typically comes from the experience of being with a stock (not portfolio) that ran up in a speculative frenzy, and then crashed. It is also the lesson many investors take from the benefit of hindsight when the equity markets fall. If only I had booked profits, they rue.

Do this to survive the froth building up in small-cap, mid-cap mutual fund schemes
funds’. The market regulator asked for a policy to be put in place to protect investors. The letter laid down two requirements for this policy. First, ‘appropriate and proactive measures are to be taken by AMCs and fund managers to protect investors, including, but not limited to, moderating inflows, portfolio rebalancing, etc.’ Second, it asked for ‘steps to ensure that investors are protected from the first-mover advantage of redeeming investors’. The specific threats that Sebi is pointing at and the measures to contain these are quite clear. The regulator is worried that if large inflows in small-cap funds continue, the quality and value of the portfolio holdings will inevitably drop. There is only so much worthwhile investable stock available in the smaller companies. The second concern is about what will happen if a small- and mid-cap crash does occur. The investors who exit as soon as a downturn begins can disproportionately benefit at the expense of those who remain, as their redemptions are likely to force fund managers to sell better quality holdings at unfavourable prices. This will compromise the fund’s quality and value for remaining investors. This is not a hypothetical situation; we have repeatedly seen it happen in debt funds.

Should you invest in thematic mutual fund NFOs? 6 factors to keep in mind
ABSL Mutual Fund launched a thematic fund, providing investors a way to play the emerging ‘manufacturing’ theme. Fast forward nine years and the investors who stayed the course find the thematic fund’s 12.5% return since inception lower than the broader market return for the respective period. Thematic new fund offers (NFOs) make a tantalising proposition—targeted exposure to specific themes. But do these funds truly perform? Statistically, funds like ABSL Manufacturing that didn’t do well form 36% of the thematic NFOs launched in the past 10 years. A higher 64% have done better than the overall market since launch, an ET Wealth study shows. Game of themes The reason for AMCs coming up with more thematic NFOs in recent years has been largely due to the regulatory cap of a single fund per category. However, funds can have any number of unique themes. Between 2014 and 2017, there were only six thematic equity NFOs (actively managed), but in the 2018-23 period, 55 new funds came into the market. Buoyant markets have helped. With equities giving double-digit returns in four of these six years, thematic funds have easily attracted eyeballs.
