Fed leaves policy rate outlook unchanged amid projected growth slowdown, temporary inflation jump
Federal Reserve held interest rates steady on Wednesday, as expected, but U.S. central bank policymakers indicated they still anticipate reducing borrowing costs by half a percentage point by the end of this year in the context of slowing economic growth and, eventually, a downturn in inflation. Taking stock of the Trump administration's rollout of tariffs, Fed officials actually marked up their outlook for inflation this year, with their preferred measure of price increases expected to end the year at 2.7% versus the 2.5% pace anticipated in December. The Fed targets inflation at 2%.

Happiness is ever elusive, yet, ever present — that's a dichotomy. One could just as easily be happy as sad. All it takes is a mental habit, a shift in attitude that begins with gratitude, capacity to perceive how we are placed even if we are suffering. While we are unhappy and sobbing, the tear ducts are working, air is available for gasps; 99% of our life is working fine. The 1% deprivation has caused pain. Once we realise that there is so much to be grateful for, it dawns on us that our job is to serve our fellow beings. Ask not what others can do for you, ask what you can do for others. This attitude of service is what brings unimaginable joy to our lives. Even if our daily actions are just the same, getting up, commuting, working, spending time with family or playing a sport, our joy is vastly enhanced by the sense of service. Asking others 'how I may help, what I could do for you, or suggesting we are all in this together to lift an individual's spirits' brings joy.

Putin has upper hand in Trump talks on elusive Ukraine peace: Analysts
Vladimir Putin scored a coup by discussing with Donald Trump in highly anticipated phone talks everything from improving bilateral ties to Iran and even hockey matches, but stopping well short of agreeing any peace path to end the war in Ukraine, analysts say. During the call on Tuesday, Putin refused a full ceasefire agreement proposed by Washington but focused instead on reviving Russian-American cooperation that has been frozen since Moscow's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. The very fact such talks took place was an achievement for the Kremlin, said Ekaterina Schulmann, a Russian political scientist based in Berlin. «The two superpowers are discussing the fate of the world and the future of humanity,» she told AFP, summing up Moscow's thinking. «It is a great achievement for Russia which reproduces a Soviet-era narrative without being the Soviet Union.»

India offers trade pacts to individual members of Mercosur
Piyush Goyal Wednesday proposed signing of free trade agreements individually with the members of the 4-member Mercosur bloc comprising Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay. His statement comes as the efforts to expand the Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA) with the Mercosur are stuck. “I propose to either expand the MERCOSUR trade agreement or look at trade deals bilaterally,” he said at a CII event. India went ahead with a bilateral trade deal with UAE when the talks to secure a trade pact with Gulf Cooperation Council nations weren’t making much headway. Goyal also said that India is also working with Chile to expand its PTA with Chile and turn it into a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement. The PTA with Chile was signed in 2006 and expanded in 2017. Within the LAC region which includes 33 countries the FTA negotiations with Peru are in advanced stages.

Union sues Trump administration for halting student loan repayment plans
income-driven repayment plans used by millions of student loan borrowers. The American Federation of Teachers in a lawsuit filed in federal court in Washington late Monday took aim at the Education Department's decision last month to halt borrowers' ability to enroll in the affordable repayment plans. The department made the change after a federal appeals court ruled that Democratic President Joe Biden's administration lacked authority to pursue a student debt relief program designed to lower monthly payments for millions of borrowers and speed up loan forgiveness for some. The court's decision, issued after Biden left office, had set back his administration's efforts to address what his White House described as a broken student debt system that can financially burden Americans seeking higher education. The Biden-era Saving on a Valuable Education (SAVE) Plan provided more generous terms than past income-based repayment plans, with monthly payments dropping for some borrowers to as low as $0. It also provided debt forgiveness for some smaller loans in as few as 10 years.

Amazon's robotaxi unit Zoox agrees recall over braking issue
Amazon's self-driving unit Zoox agreed to recall 258 vehicles due to issues with its automated driving system that could cause unexpected hard braking, after a US investigation, according to a company filing Wednesday. The recall affects vehicles equipped with self-driving software versions released before November 5. The California-based company said it has addressed the issue by updating the software on the company-owned vehicles. In May, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration opened a probe into self-driving Zoox vehicles due to unexpected braking leading to two rear-end collisions that injured motorcyclists.

Govt to come up with new concessional toll charges for highway users: Nitin Gadkari
Road transport and highways minister Nitin Gadkari on Wednesday said the government will soon come up with a new policy for toll charges on national highways, offering a reasonable concession to consumers. Replying to queries in Rajya Sabha, the minister also said that the apex committee and high-level empowered committee have recommended further deliberations for satellite-based tolling in view of security and privacy considerations, breach and overall operational control. The ministry of road transport and highways is firming up annual and lifetime charges for toll on national highways likely to be around Rs 3000 for a year and Rs 30,000 for 15 years, paid in one-go. The move is aimed at maintaining cash flow for the government while ensuring seamless travel experience at toll plazas by highway users. Responding to a question, the minister asserted that the government is spending a lot on building road infrastructure and therefore toll charges are necessary. “It is the policy of the department that when you want a good road, you have to pay for it,” Gadkari said. According to the rules of 2008, toll plaza on the same section of the national highway and in the same direction cannot be established within 60 kilometers.

Bihar polls months away, Congress calls for implementation of women's reservation law
The failure to implement the law will bring out women workers on streets in Bihar and other states, she said. Suggesting political motives behind bringing the law for women's reservation, Lamba said the delay in its implementation was akin to betraying the women of India. «The BJP government has been in full majority since 2014, but the women reservation law was passed just ahead of the 2024 elections. Why is it not being implemented? This is our next question to Modiji. »Why women, who form half of India's population, are deprived of their rights to participate in the assembly and Lok Sabha?" she asked while addressing the media after Geeta Patel formally took over the reins of Gujarat Pradesh Mahila Congress.
