Southwest Airlines breaks with another tradition and checked bags will cost you now
Southwest Airlines said Tuesday that it will begin charging customers a fee to check bags, abandoning a decades-long practice that executives had described last fall as key to differentiating the budget carrier from its rivals. Southwest, which built years of advertising campaigns around its policy of letting passengers check up to two bags for free, said people who haven't either reached the upper tiers of its Rapid Rewards loyalty program, bought a business class ticket or hold the airline's credit card will have to pay for checked bags. The airline did not outline the fee schedule but said the new policy would start with May 28 bookings.

India's cotton imports to double as output falls short, says trade body
India's cotton imports in 2024/25 are likely to double from a year ago as production is set to fall below consumption because of a decline in acreage planted and adverse weather, a leading trade body said on Tuesday. Higher imports by the world's second-largest producer of the fibre could support global prices, which fell to their lowest in more than four years after top consumer China levied duties on imports from the United States. India could import 3 million bales in the current marketing year ending on September 30, up from 1.52 million bales imported a year ago, the Cotton Association of India (CAI) said in a statement. During the period from October to February, 2.2 million bales of overseas cotton landed at Indian ports, according to CAI estimates. India's cotton production in the current year is likely to fall by 10% from a year ago, to 29.53 million bales, even as demand is estimated to rise marginally to 31.5 million bales, it said.

How India's 2023-25 run in white-ball cricket is amongst best-ever in sport's history
India's run from the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup, which ended with a heartbreaking loss to Australia in the final after an unprecedented 10-match win streak, till the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 has been one of the finest runs by a team in white-ball cricket, 23 wins in 24 matches, one loss and two trophies won, reported ESPNCricinfo. India won both the last year's T20 World Cup at Barbados and the Champions Trophy in Dubai undefeated. Had they won the 2023 World Cup, they would have had all the ICC titles in white-ball cricket at the same time, that too undefeated, which no team has ever managed to do.

Sell-off in US stocks is not a signal that US economic risks have escalated: UBS
In the American markets on Monday, the Nasdaq index tanked 4 per cent, while the S&P 500 also closed more than 2.7 per cent lower, causing stock markets around the globe to trade in the red. The market participants saw S&P 500 losing over USD 4 trillion market valuation. «The sell-off has been exacerbated by the unwinding of extended positioning in certain market segments such as momentum and tech stocks and is not necessarily a signal that US economic risks have escalated significantly.» says the report. The tech-dominated Nasdaq composite index witnessed a 4 per cent fall, showing investors' sentiment. In the major losers, the AI fab company Nvidia lost about 5 per cent or USD 140 billion in a single day, while the stocks of Tesla declined about 15 per cent, and Apple plunged 4.85 per cent. Among the other major tech giants, Meta, which owns popular social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, lost USD 10 billion, down 4.42 per cent.

Hyderabad’s peripheral real estate markets poised for transformative growth amid infrastructure growth
While established hotspots in West and Central Hyderabad continue to drive real estate activity, peripheral areas—including the North, South, East, and West peripheries—are projected to account for 12-15% of Hyderabad’s Grade A office stock and 5-10% of annual office space demand in the next 3-5 years, according to Colliers’ latest report, ‘Hyderabad: Emerging Real Estate Growth Hotspots’. The residential market is also set to witness significant traction, with property prices in these peripheral areas expected to rise by 10-20% over the same period. “Hyderabad’s office market continues to mature, driving one-fifth of the demand and over one-fourth of the new supply across the top six cities in India during 2024. The city’s peripheral areas are set to enter a transformative growth phase, fueled by upcoming infrastructure projects and supportive government policies. The West Periphery micro-market, particularly areas like Kokapet, Neopolis, and Narsingi, is likely to witness heightened commercial activity, driven by price arbitrage compared to established IT hubs of Gachibowli and HITEC City, along with enhancements in metro connectivity,” said Arpit Mehrotra, Managing Director, Office Services, Colliers India.

Several Indians struggle to sleep, turn to voice assistants, survey by Amazon Alexa and YouGov reveals
According to the survey, the majority of the respondents started their bedtime routine from 8PM onwards every day, with 53% choosing to start their routine after 10:30 PM. The top activities that are part of the bed-time routines include watching video content (58%), connecting with family and friends (59%), listening to podcasts, music, or audiobooks (58%), and scrolling through social media apps (57%). The survey found one in two respondents use voice assistants to set up their sleep routines, with more people in the 35-45 years age bracket using voice assistants than those aged between 25-34 years. «Sleep routines are gaining popularity, and what's noteworthy is that smart technologies, especially voice assistants like Alexa, are increasingly becoming a valuable aid in helping people follow their bedtime routines. Personalised voice AI experiences are emerging as practical alternatives to handheld screen devices before bedtime. Whether it's playing meditation sessions or relaxing sounds, listening to audiobooks or music, setting reminders and alarms, or controlling smart devices to adjust the room’s sleep environment, people are finding innovative ways to use Alexa as part of their bedtime routines. Alexa users can easily set up their bedtime routine through the Alexa app, customizing it to their specific needs and preferences,» said Teena Sidana, Country Manager, Alexa India. The survey said 45% of the respondents use voice assistants in smart devices to listen to music, podcasts, meditation playlists, ambient sounds, movies, and audiobooks, with households with couples and kids ranking higher in taking help of voice assistants.
