Why Kannada actor Darshan’s Qaidi No 511 at Ballari Jail is causing a major buzz
Darshan Thoogudeepa, who is embroiled in the high-profile Renukaswamy murder case, has been making waves ever since his transfer to Ballari jail. The buzz isn't just about his legal battle, but also the curious detail of his undertrial prisoner number – 511. Darshan's previous identification in Bengaluru's Parappana Agrahara Central Jail was UTP No. 6106. However, after a controversial photograph surfaced showing him smoking with a notorious rowdy sweater, he was relocated to Ballari prison. Here, he was assigned UTP No. 511, a number that adds up to 7, aligning with the actor's well-documented obsession with the digit.

TMC MP's letter to Mamata exposes corruption, dictatorial attitude within party: BJP
TMC MP Jawahar Sircar's letter to West Bengal Chief Minister and party supremo Mamata Banerjee has exposed the «dirt, corruption and dictatorial attitude» within the party, the BJP said on Sunday as it pressed for her resignation. Sircar wrote to Banerjee stating that he has decided to resign from the Rajya Sabha and leave politics. He claimed that corruption by a section of leaders of his party — the Trinamool Congress (TMC) — and lack of action against them was one of the reasons for his decision. In a statement, BJP national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla said, «The letter by Jawahar Sircar, TMC MP, exposes dirt, corruption and dictatorial attitude within the TMC. TMC means 'too much corruption'». It indicates that every institution in West Bengal has been corroded with corruption by the Mamata Banerjee government and those who raise the issue are heckled and silenced, he alleged.

Prakash Singh case. State governments have been loath to implement the order because it would mean political leaders relinquishing personal control over the coercive apparatus that they covet. As much as these structural reforms are desirable, we need to think of other politically feasible reforms that take us in the right direction.

Ripun Bora returns to Congress
Congress chief Ripun Bora, who had recently resigned as the state Trinamool Congress (TMC) president, returned to the Congress on Sunday. AICC general secretary in-charge of Assam Jitendra Singh welcomed Bora back into the party fold at the beginning of an Extended Executive Committee meeting at Charaideo. «The people of Assam are fed up with the misrule of BJP government. We will all work together to strengthen the Congress further and expose the ruling alliance's corruption, communalism before the people,» Bora said. Several top functionaries of state TMC also joined the Congress along with him.

How Democrats can flip Red districts Blue
presidential campaigns should devote more resources to activating the base or persuading the undecided. For congressional candidates who are challenging the majority party, however, prioritizing persuasion is a must. At the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, I sat down with two House candidates running to unseat freshmen Republicans to ask: What does it take a turn a red district blue? One of them I’ve known for many years through New York politics: John Avlon, the former CNN host running against Representative Nick LaLota on Long Island. The other, Rachel Bohman, is taking on Representative Brad Finstad in a district that’s been thrust into the national spotlight: Tim Walz’s old seat in southern Minnesota.

India may experience extreme winter this year with some states hitting 3 degrees; All you need to know
India is gearing up for an exceptionally harsh winter, as forecasted by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The IMD has pointed to the onset of the La Niña phenomenon in September 2024, which is expected to cause a significant drop in temperatures and increased rainfall across the country. La Niña, the cooler counterpart to El Niño, is characterised by lower sea surface temperatures in the equatorial Pacific, leading to widespread climate effects, including colder and harsher winters. According to the IMD's announcement on September 2, 2024, La Niña is likely to result in a severe winter. Typically, La Niña begins between April and June, strengthening between October and February, and can last from nine months to two years. It is driven by strong easterly winds pushing ocean waters westward, which cools the ocean surface. This contrasts with El Niño, which brings warmer conditions. Different regions in India are expected to experience varying degrees of winter severity. Northern states like Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Jammu and Kashmir may see especially frigid conditions, with temperatures potentially falling as low as 3°C. Additionally, the combination of colder weather and increased rainfall could impact agriculture, particularly in areas that rely on winter crops.

The diplomats who built India’s foreign policy
Nehru’s First Recruits: The Diplomats Who Built Independent India’s Foreign Policy, is a reminder that India’s foreign policy did not take shape in the hands of the current external affairs ministry, but has been built on a long legacy of a storied foreign service founded in 1948 by India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. As the title suggests, Bhattacherjee’s book is about India’s very first diplomats, the men and women recruited to the Indian Foreign Service (IFS) in the first dozen years after independence who helped shaped an independent foreign policy for a country that had been a British colony for nearly two centuries.

As EV demand slows, Europe’s auto industry might face €15 billion in fines over emissions, warns Renault CEO
Europe's autos industry could face fines of 15 billion euros ($17.4 billion) for carbon emissions due to slowing demand for electric vehicles, Renault chief executive Luca de Meo said on Saturday. Automakers face tougher European Union CO2 targets in 2025 as the cap on average emissions from new vehicles sales falls to 94 grams/km from 116 g/km in 2024. «If electric vehicles remain at today's level, the European industry may have to pay 15 billion euros in fines or give up the production of more than 2.5 million vehicles,» de Meo told France Inter radio.

Love for my sport keeps me grounded: Manu Bhaker
It’s not exactly how MANU BHAKER wanted to enjoy her Olympic success — two bronze medals. After a hectic schedule, she was looking forward to ‘some time off’ where she would put her feet up and just relax. Instead, she has been on a whirlwind tour of media houses, photo shoots, corporate events, podcasts studios etc. But, like she handles all the tricky situations at the shooting range, she is acing this phase of her life too. ET catches up with Bhaker to talk about her life after the Olympic success, her memories of pressure moments just before she won the medals and more. Excerpts What has changed around you since winning the Olympic medals? I have been attending a lot of events since then. Which is okay because I enjoy everything. It was pre-decided that I would take a long break after the Olympics. But because of these events, I have been travelling a lot. I had thought I would get some time off and I would sleep, have rest, and stay at home. But I haven’t got time to do all that. I am not complaining (laughs). I am enjoying this phase also.
