Google agreed to pay millions for California news. Journalists call it a bad deal
Google will soon give California millions of dollars to help pay for local journalism jobs in a first-in-the-nation deal, but journalists and other media industry experts are calling it a disappointing agreement that mostly benefits the tech giant. The agreement, which was hashed out behind closed doors and announced this week, will direct tens of millions of public and private dollars to keep local news organisations afloat. Critics say it's a textbook political maneuver by tech giants to avoid a fee under what could have been groundbreaking legislation. California lawmakers agreed to kill a bill requiring tech to support news outlets they profit from in exchange for Google's financial commitment. By shelving the bill, the state effectively gave up on an avenue that could have required Google and social media platforms to make ongoing payments to publishers for linking news content, said Victor Pickard, professor of media policy and political economy at the University of Pennsylvania. California also left behind a much bigger amount of funding that could have been secured under the legislation, he said.

ECB policymakers' views converging on Sept rate cut, sources say
European Central Bank policymakers are lining up behind another interest rate cut in September and only major data surprises in the coming weeks could delay the move, on and off record conversations with seven sources indicate. Financial markets already overwhelmingly expect a fresh rate cut next month, but policymakers have been circumspect on their next move after the central bank was criticised by some for too overtly committing itself before its first rate cut back in June. A raft of figures on growth, wages and prices in recent weeks has started to sway them and many are increasingly open to discussing their views, arguing that conditions laid out for a cut are being fulfilled.

Rare August snow in California? Yes it could happen

Potato, rice prices drop amid supply glut, market shifts
potato and rice have started falling. Having remained firm for the last three months, prices of potatoes have fallen by 8 per cent in the last 20 days as the cold storages in Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal are overloaded with potatoes which need to be used up before November. Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee in the third week of July had stopped inter-state movement of potatoes and didn't even allow truck movement carrying potatoes from Uttar Pradesh to the north-eastern states resulting in oversupply and prices falling. Prices of potatoes which stood at Rs 36 a kg 20 days ago are now commanding a price of Rs 34 a kg. Even though Mamata Banerjee on last Tuesday allowed inter-state trade of potatoes for the next seven days on the consideration that there will be no shortage of the tuber for the state and the prices will not rise, the potato trade in Uttar Pradesh said that the sudden decision to stop movement of potatoes has disrupted the supply chain.
