Small businesses grapple with global tech outages created by CrowdStrike
software update that caused technological havoc worldwide on Friday, and its repercussions continued through the weekend. The breadth of the outages highlighted the fragility of a digitized world dependent on a few providers for key computing services. But the problem appeared to divide those affected into haves and have-nots. Major customers of Microsoft and CrowdStrike are getting IT support to resolve the issues, but many smaller businesses whose Windows PCs may have received the problematic update are still struggling. Take Tsvetta Kaleynska, owner and founder of the Manhattan-based consumer insights company RILA Global Consulting, which has Fortune 500 clients. As of Saturday, she resolved the payroll issue and she got an extension until Monday on the research project. But the prospective client will not move forward with the new contract, cutting her annual earnings by nearly 25%, she estimated. The problem: she couldn't sign the contract because Docusign, which runs on Microsoft software affected by the faulty update, was down.

Controversial Kanwar Yatra order to echo in Parliament, Supreme Court; RLD joins chorus for withdrawal
Kanwar Yatra route to display their owners' names escalated as the BJP's ally RLD on Sunday joined the chorus for its withdrawal and the opposition parties stated they will raise the issue in Parliament. The issue has also reached the Supreme Court which is scheduled to hear on Monday a plea filed by an NGO — Association of Protection of Civil Rights — against the UP government order. Extensive arrangements have been made across several states for the Kanwar Yatra that starts on Monday with the beginning of the Sawan month of the Hindu calendar during which lakhs of Shiva devotees carry the holy water from the Ganges in Haridwar to their homes while offering it at Shiva temples on their way. The opposition has alleged that the order on eateries is «communal and divisive» and intended to target Muslims and Scheduled Castes by forcing them to reveal their identity. But the BJP maintained that the step has been taken keeping in mind law and order issues and the religious sentiments of pilgrims.

Cybersecurity: Microsoft’s Azure woes and Google’s acquisition moves
That cybersecurity and its failures can impact large parts of the world was evident on Friday, when Microsoft’s Azure outage—reported to be on account of CrowdStrike, Azure’s first line of cyber defence—left large numbers of computer users staring at blue screens that did not budge, preventing work. It brought airlines, media houses and banks (among others) to their knees in diverse markets, including India. So crucial is cybersecurity now in the tech world that Google’s parent Alphabet wants to acquire Wiz, a cybersecurity startup, as New York Times reported, even if that exposes it to antitrust scrutiny from regulators worldwide.

: Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) Girish Chandra Murmu has said Artificial Intelligence (AI) has arrived and the Supreme Audit Institution (SAI) is taking advantage of new technologies in improving the quality of public expenditure. «As it develops, we will develop ourselves accordingly. Whatever challenges are there we will try and overcome. We will follow global experiences and practices related to this and share our own to them,» Murmu told PTI. Recently, he said, «We have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi for leveraging AI and other emerging technologies for the advancement of audit practices.» With the rapid advancement of AI, machine learning, and data analytics, traditional methodologies are being redefined, offering unprecedented opportunities for innovation and efficiency, he said.

Food processing deserves 'good budget': Union Min Chirag Paswan
Food Processing Minister Chirag Paswan feels that his ministry «deserves a good budget» allocation for setting up of processing units across the country which will help in providing job opportunities to local people and also boost farmers' income. Without disclosing contents of his ministry's request from the Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Paswan said his ministry has sent the Budget wish list to the finance ministry and was not sure of how much of that will be accepted in this budget, considering the limitations. But, he was hopeful that the wishlist would be accepted in the subsequent years. In an interaction with PTI, he also outlined his top three priorities — setting up of food processing units, taking Indian brands to global markets and clearing various misconceptions regarding processed foods.

When euphemisms get tasty: How people have used words to combat food taboos
chicken for himself but told the waiter to bill it as a vegetarian dish. This was treated as quite routine. I was reminded of this while reading Avay Shukla’s memoir of IAS life, 'The Deputy Commissioner’s Dog and Other Colleagues'. Since liquor is not allowed at government dinners, it is simply billed as chicken, he wrote: “A peg of single malt is worth a whole chicken, a Scotch two legs, a shot of rum is equivalent to a wing…” This kind of creativity comes up whenever people find consumption habits constrained. Yes Minister, the British TV serial, depicted this with an episode set in a Middle Eastern country with strict prohibitions on alcohol. So, at an official reception, the British set up a secure communications room where the booze is stored and periodically, the minister and bureaucrats visit it for a ‘message’ from “Mr Johnny Walker from the Scotch Office”, “Mr Smirnoff from the Russian embassy” or “a delegation of Teachers”.

BJP-led govt at Centre would not last long: Mamata Banerjee
Mamata Banerjee on Sunday said the BJP-led government at the Centre would not last long as it has been formed through «intimidation». While addressing the mega 'Martyrs' Day' rally of the TMC, Banerjee lauded Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, who was present at the programme, for his party's performance in the Lok Sabha polls in Uttar Pradesh. «The government at the Centre won't last long. This is not a stable government and will collapse soon,» she said. While praising Akhilesh Yadav, the TMC supremo said, «The 'Khel' (game) you played in UP should have forced the BJP government (in UP) to resign, but the shameless government is continuing in power by misusing agencies and other means.»

India staring at infertility crisis, may alter population dynamics, says top IVF chain Founder
population dynamics, potentially leading to an ageing crisis, Dr Ajay Murdia, the man behind India's one of the largest fertility chain, Indira IVF, has said. Talking to PTI ahead of the World IVF Day on July 25, Dr Murdia said that India stands at a critical crossroads, facing an unprecedented infertility crisis that threatens not only millions of families but the country's future demographic balance. «According to some estimates, about 27.5 million married couples are actively trying to conceive and are suffering from infertility. But only about 275,000 IVF cycles are performed every year,» he said. «This silent epidemic, affecting one in six couples, is rapidly evolving into a national emergency with far-reaching consequences for India's societal structure and economic prospects,» Murdia, Founder and Chairman of Indira IVF, said.
