Nancy Pelosi seeks to convince Joe Biden to end his campaign; behind the scenes efforts yet to yield any result
Democrats face an important challenge on how to convince Joe Biden to step down ahead of the US Presidential Election in November. Biden’s popularity ratings have gone down and now Democrats are worried about how to convince him to step down. Trump and the Republicans have surged ahead in most of the surveys. Biden has continued to stay in the race and refused to step aside making way for another party member to take his place. Politico has reported that the former Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi has been working behind the scenes to convince Biden to step down and let another Democrat take over and contest against Trump. Being a senior member of the party and who someone Biden looks up to, she may be the one to save the Democrats.

RSS-linked bodies point out flaws in centralised exams
ABVP) wasted no time in organising a nationwide agitation on the NEET-UG paper leak controversy in June, the Shiksha Sanskriti Utthan Nyas has now raised questions over the «centralised» approach for the Central University Entrance Test (CUET). The Vidya Bharti — which runs a chain of schools — had earlier this month expressed «deep concern» over the NEET-UG leak. All these organisations are affiliated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). It is probably the first such instance during the tenure of the Narendra Modi government that these organisations have unanimously and strongly pointed out faults and gaps in the government-run exam system. All of these are also learnt to have communicated concerns and forwarded various suggestions to the Centre's high-powered panel on exam reforms under former Isro chairman K Radhakrishnan, ET has learnt.

Troubled Waters: Will the Seine be clean enough by the Olympics? Not even the experts know yet
Paris Olympics less than two weeks away, a question hangs over the Games: Will the Seine River be clean enough for athletes to swim in? Triathlon and marathon swimming are scheduled to take place in the Seine, where it has been illegal to swim for more than a century. Despite the city's efforts to clean up the long-polluted river, the water has tested unsafe for humans in recent weeks, and cleaner on other days. The Games run from July 26-Aug. 11. To clean up the river, Paris invested 1.4 billion euros ($1.5 billion) in building infrastructure to catch more stormwater when it rains — the same water that contains bacteria-laden wastewater that enters the river during periods of heavy rain and makes it unsafe to swim in. In May, Paris officials inaugurated a giant underground water storage basin next to the Austerlitz train station aimed at collecting excess rainwater and stopping wastewater from entering the Seine. The basin can hold the equivalent of 20 Olympic swimming pools of dirty water that will now be treated and is the centerpiece of major infrastructure improvements that the city has rushed to finish in time for the Games, but to also ensure that Parisians have a cleaner Seine in years to come.

Indian, Chinese companies' JV proposals may get quicker nods
Union home secretary, the person said. Proposals under Press Note 3 will be expedited only when certain conditions are met. First, the Indian company has to make a case that the technology required and investment proposed is critical for developing the local manufacturing supply chain in areas such as hi-tech components. Second, the management and board of the investee company should not have any Chinese nationals in key roles such as MD/CEO and finance chief, and the Chinese partner can only have a minority stake in any partnership. These conditions will apply to Chinese joint ventures with Indian entities and even with foreign firms operating in India, according to four industry executives. The government plans underscore acknowledgment in industry circles that current Press Note 3 approvals are taking much longer time even where the Chinese has a minority, non-controlling and non-strategic stake, impacting investor sentiments, decisions and investment flows into India. The ministry of commerce and industry, through which Press Note 3 applications are processed, didn't respond to ET's queries.

HC ruled Haryana's Karnataka-like law 'unconstitutional' in 2023
Karnataka Cabinet on Wednesday approved a bill mandating 100% reservation for Kannadigas in the private sector for Group C and D posts, a look at similar laws in other states that didn't pass the court test. In November last year, the Punjab and Haryana High Court struck down a similar law passed by the BJP-led government in Haryana. The Haryana government had passed a law that mandated 75% reservation for locals in private sector jobs having a gross monthly salary of less than Rs 30,000. Terming it «unconstitutional», a division bench of the Punjab and Haryana HC had struck down the law.

Donald Trump says Taiwan should pay more for defence and dodges questions if he would defend the island
Donald Trump demanded the self-governed island of Taiwan pay for US protection, dodged the question of whether he would defend the island from Beijing's military action, and accused the island of taking the semiconductor industry away from the United States. “Taiwan should pay us for defence,” Trump said, in an interview with Bloomberg Businessweek. “You know, we're no different than an insurance company." Trump's remarks, made public Tuesday, mark a departure from the stance of President Joe Biden, who has said several times that he would send troops to defend the island, and add uncertainty to Trump's approach to Taiwan at a time his running mate, JD Vance, has called China the “biggest threat” for the United States.
