Can AI truly replicate the screams of a man on fire? Video game performers want their work protected
motion capture sensors tacked onto Noshir Dalal's body tracked his movements as he unleashed aerial strikes, overhead blows and single-handed attacks that would later show up in a video game. He eventually swung the sledgehammer gripped in his hand so many times that he tore a tendon in his forearm. By the end of the day, he couldn't pull the handle of his car door open. The physical strain this type of motion work entails, and the hours put into it, are part of the reason why he believes all video-game performers should be protected equally from the use of unregulated artificial intelligence. Video game performers say they fear AI could reduce or eliminate job opportunities because the technology could be used to replicate one performance into a number of other movements without their consent. That's a concern that led the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists to go on strike in late July.

Ahead of the liberation of the territory by Ukrainian forces later that year, Russian forces moved him inside Russia — to Yulia's despair and to general indifference.

Gold rises $2,500 for first time on outlook for lower rates
Gold topped $2,500 an ounce for the first time, bolstered by hopes the US Federal Reserve is edging closer to cutting interest rates. Spot bullion climbed as much as 2.2% Friday, exceeding the previous record set last month, as a disappointing reading on the US housing market reinforced expectations of fast and deeper cuts by the Fed. Lower rates generally are positive for gold as it pays no interest. The precious metal is up more than 20% this year amid mounting optimism on monetary easing and large purchases by central banks. It also has seen increased demand as a haven asset due to rising geopolitical risks, including tensions in the Middle East and Russia's war with Ukraine.

Russia says Ukraine planning Kursk nuclear plant 'provocation'
Russia accused Ukraine on Saturday of planning to attack a nuclear plant in the Kursk region that President Volodymyr Zelenskiy's troops have entered and blame such a «provocation» on Moscow, Interfax news agency said. Kyiv denied that as «insane» propaganda. Ukraine launched an incursion into Russia's western Kursk region on Aug. 6 to try and swing the dynamics of the two-and-a-half year war in its favour after Moscow's 2022 invasion.

Ramakrishna Dalmia: A capitalist with the heart of a revolutionary
NEW DELHI : Indian business over the years has had very few mavericks with the mix of audacity and controversy that Ramakrishna Dalmia, the founder of the Dalmia group, did. As much a product of his times as an architect of his destiny, he was a defiant and towering figure, his life a potent cocktail of outsized personality, political ambition and shrewd financial dealings. To that, he added strategic alliances, including his little-known piquant friendship with his neighbour Muhammad Ali Jinnah.

US official says Mideast mediators are preparing for implementation of cease-fire deal in advance
Gaza cease-fire deal is imminent, a US official said Friday that Mideast negotiators are working out logistics for the potential release of hostages and distribution of aid as part of any agreement to end the Israel-Hamas war. The official, who spoke to reporters on condition of anonymity in keeping with rules set by the White House, said the proposal currently on the table basically bridges every gap between Israel and Hamas and mediators were making preparations before a final deal is approved. It was unclear what measures were being taken, but the official said a new «implementation cell» was being established in Cairo in advance. The cell would focus on logistics, including freeing hostages, providing humanitarian aid for Gaza and ensuring that the terms of the pact are met, the official said. The comments came hours after mediators expressed hope that a deal was within reach. They said two days of talks had wrapped up in Qatar and that they plan to reconvene in Cairo next week to seal an agreement to stop the fighting.

The ‘we-brought-you-freedom’ story has an expiry date
Through the broken glass Of a library window The burning books Can’t be read. So new ones Will have to be written. —Ian McMillan (@IMcMillan) Over a decade ago, I walked into a small two-storeyed white house in Dhaka. It felt familiar. I’d grown up around houses like that in Kolkata with red oxide floors, black-and-white photographs on the wall, the rooms cool even on a warm afternoon.

Mint Quick Edit | Why did Ukraine invade Russia?
Russia, invaded over the past 10 days by Ukraine’s forces rolling into Kursk, last saw its borders violated this way only in World War II (by Nazi Germany). This flip in fortunes has stunned not just weary war watchers, who were wondering how long Kyiv could hold up against its bigger adversary, but perhaps Moscow too, given the latter’s sluggish response.

BNP may approach interim Govt to secure release of ex-ministers
Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and pro-Pakistan Jamaat-e-Islami are planning to approach Bangladesh's interim government to secure bail for two former deputy ministers and some senior army officers convicted for their role in the 10-truck arms smuggling case, considered the biggest arms haul in the history of Bangladesh. BNP and Jamaat played a key role in the recent student protests in the country, which led to the ouster of Sheikh Hasina as Bangladesh PM. Sources said the two parties are likely to seek bail for former deputy home minister Lutfuzzaman Babar and former deputy education minister Abdus Salam Pintu, despite their conviction in anti-terror cases.

Almost 400 Hezbollah members dead in 10 months of Israel clashes
Hezbollah and Israeli forces has killed senior commanders and several hundred fighters from the Iran-backed group, causing destruction and displacing tens of thousands on both sides. Hezbollah has seen more fighters killed since October than when it last went to war with Israel in the summer of 2006. AFP looks at the mounting toll for the Shiite Muslim movement, which has been trading near-daily fire with the Israeli army in support of Hamas since the Palestinian militant group's October 7 attack on Israel triggered the Gaza war.
