Ideological contradictions rule but can also spur new ideas
Philosopher George Santayana said the world is in “perpetual caricature" of itself because, every moment, it is presented with a contradiction of what it is pretending to be. This holds especially true even for the knowledge universe, where an eternal cycle of conflicts and contradictions ensures that the graveyard of old ideas is always full, leaving behind a vacuum for new ideas to take birth. This never-ending sequence becomes the source, the wellspring, for renewal and endless optimism.

Jindal’s ‘Steel of India’ campaign—whose idea is it anyway?
Jindal Steel’s capacity expansion will fuel growth, but beware the China factor Despite the settlement, the controversy resurfaced when Earlyman Films and Kondurkar Studio, which claimed credit for the campaign, entered it in the Cannes Lions awards and the Kyoorius Creative Awards 2024. While the Kyoorius committee, after reviewing the case with industry juries and a legal team, decided to disqualify all entries from Kondurkar Studio and Earlyman Films across categories, the campaign went on to win a Silver Lion and a Bronze Lion at the 2024 Cannes Lions in the Film Craft category. This was despite the ongoing legal and ethical questions about its origin, rekindling the debate over who rightfully owns the idea behind the campaign.

Mumbai: The two monetary policy committee (MPC) members who voted to cut interest rates and change monetary policy stance at its last meeting believe the Indian economy needs to grow at joined its potential growth of 8%, as inflation continues to approach the target of 4%. The MPC had voted to keep repo rate unchanged at 6.5% for the eighth consecutive time in its June meeting. Jayanth Varma, who had been voting for a rate cut since February this year, argues that MPC should start cutting rates this quarter to give a boost to growth in FY26.

Babar Azam advised to claim 'conspiracy letter theory' by Pakistani politician after World Cup exit
T20 World Cup 2024, Abdul Qadir Patel, a lawmaker from the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), has proposed a suggestion for the national team captain, Babar Azam. The team was knocked out in the group stage for the first time in its history after a crucial match between co-hosts USA and Ireland was abandoned without a ball being bowled. This early exit has ignited intense scrutiny and debate about Babar Azam's future as captain. Pakistan's T20 World Cup campaign began disastrously with a shocking Super Over loss to the USA. This was followed by a six-wicket defeat to arch-rivals India at a packed Nassau County International Cricket Stadium on June 9. These consecutive losses left Pakistan on the brink of elimination. Despite a seven-wicket victory over Canada and a win against Ireland, Pakistan finished third in Group A with four points from four matches, thus failing to advance to the Super Eight stage.

Cool beans! cafes are having a field day this summer
summer heat is drawing people out to cafes serving cold beverages like iced coffee and tea as well as summer-specific products, according to multiple industry executives. National chains such as Third Wave Coffee, Chaayos, AbCoffee, and Boba Bhai said they are registering increasing footfall at their cafes — across northern India in particular — offering a stark contrast to reports of dipping sales at restaurant chains in the region that is battling record summer temperatures. While the availability of cold beverages and expansion of the on-premise menu is boosting sales, these cafes are also recording a spike in orders for delivery of summer-specific items. In addition, new-age cafes are popular destinations for remote working and meetings, which is further boosting footfalls.

Russia is storing up a crime wave when its war on Ukraine ends
Russia has sent so many men to join its war in Ukraine that crime levels in the country fell soon after the invasion began. Now their return is starting to unleash a wave of offending. Crimes committed by servicemen that aren’t linked to the war increased by more than 20% last year, according to data from Russia’s Supreme Court. While the overall numbers are still small and many returning servicemembers don’t go onto commit offenses, there was a jump in cases of violent crimes as well as thefts and drug-related transgressions. The figures exclude crimes involving tens of thousands of convicts released from jail to join the war under a program set up by the late Wagner mercenary group leader Yevgeny Prigozhin. Those who survived six months at the front were able to gain a pardon from President Vladimir Putin and return to Russia as free men.

Rise of EVs: The urgency of climate action
climate change are evident through increased floods, droughts, heat waves and other extreme weather events across the globe. Scientists warn that if immediate action is not taken, the damage caused may become irreversible by 2030. One of the major contributors to global warming is greenhouse gas emissions from traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. However, there is still hope if we accelerate the adoption of zero-emission electric vehicles. The Auto Industry's Electric Shift

RBI MPC minutes: Panelists flag incoming impact of 'exceptionally' warm summers on food inflation
Reserve Bank of India's Monetary Policy Committee have flagged worries relating to price worries in coming months owing to 'exceptionally' warm summer months experienced across the country, as per the Minutes of the June meeting released on Friday. RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das opined that retail inflation in India would moderate to an average of 4.5 per cent in FY25, higher than the target of 4 per cent. «In the immediate months, however, the impact of exceptionally warm summer months on output of certain perishables; a likely rabi production shortfall in some pulses and vegetables – particularly potatoes and onions; and the upward revisions in milk prices, warrant close monitoring,» Das said.

Is climate change leading to frequent and high intensity heat waves in North America?
North America continues to be gripped by a heat wave. The heatwave that began in May and continues to affect day to day life in the central and eastern states of the US has already killed many others in Mexico. According to the scientists, this was made 35 times more likely because of anthropogenic factors causing climate change. Human induced activities such as burning of fossil fuels has caused this issue. In neighboring Mexico, this heatwave has already killed 125 people and led to thousands of heatstroke cases. There is bad news as this heatwave like conditions will only intensify if human induced activities do not reduce, according to scientists. This study was conducted by World Weather Attribution which is an international collaboration of scientists who study climate change. Record high temperatures:
