appraisal season winds to a close, the eventual opening up in the job market in the coming months may see a wave of resignations across corporate India, with many employees looking for change, suggest the findings of a new survey. As much as 86% of 5,562 professionals who responded to a survey put together by job portal Naukri.com for ET said they would be actively looking out for new jobs now that appraisals were over. About 39% of the respondents said their appraisals had been worse than last year, while they were similar for 33% and better for the balance 28%. People have chosen to remain where they were as the job market was muted in several sectors with employers exercising caution in hiring decisions fearing cost escalation, said Arvind Usretay, regional client manager – Asia at HR consultancy Mercer. “When such a phenomenon occurs, it bottles up the regular churn in the market, leading to ‘waves’ of sorts (when the job market revives),” he said. “The last time we witnessed such a frenzy was about 24 months ago.”

What is a meteotsunami? What happened when it hit shores of Lake Michigan?
Lake Michigan, the question that has popped up is..what is a meteotsunami? According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, 'meteotsunamis' are large waves, driven by air-pressure disturbances often associated with fast-moving weather events, such as severe thunderstorms, squalls, and other storm fronts. They are not the result of seismic activities. It happens when the storm generates a wave that moves toward the shore. It is amplified by a shallow continental shelf and inlet, bay, or other coastal features.

Developed economies lead the global race to ease monetary policy, for now
Expert view: RBI may implement shallow rate cut even if US Fed defers, says Rajani Sinha of CareEdge Among developed economies, the European Central Bank, Bank of Canada and the Swiss National Bank have started trimming interest rates. The usual trendsetter for global monetary policy decisions, the US Federal Reserve, is still in a wait-and-watch mode. As for emerging markets, key central banks such as the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), Bank of Korea, Bank of Indonesia and People’s Bank of China are maintaining the status quo on key lending rates.

Emergency resolution in Lok Sabha exposes anti-democratic thinking of Congress, says Amit Shah
Amit Shah on Wednesday hailed Speaker Om Birla for moving a resolution in Lok Sabha condemning the imposition of Emergency in 1975 by former prime minister Indira Gandhi and said it has exposed the «anti-democratic» thinking of the Congress which harmed the major pillars of democracy like «judiciary, bureaucracy and media». Shah also said that Lok Sabha remembered the Emergency, which was an «Era of Injustice» and expressed its sympathy to the poor, Dalits and backward people, who had to suffer the exploitation and atrocities of the then Indira Gandhi government, when the rights of the citizens of the country were destroyed and their freedom was snatched away. The home minister said many sensitive amendments made in the Constitution during the dark period of Emergency expose the dictatorial mentality of the Congress which centralised all powers in one person. «It (resolution) has exposed the anti-democratic thinking of the Congress which has harmed the major pillars like judiciary, bureaucracy and media, has condemned the cruelty of Congress in imprisoning lakhs of opposition leaders for more than one and a half year without any reason,» Shah wrote in a post on X in Hindi with hashtag #EmergencyHorrors.

India's inflation also 'K-shaped'; rural folk more hurt by price-rise: HSBC
Mumbai: Just like the post-pandemic recovery, the Indian inflation story is also 'K-shaped' and is hurting certain sections more than others, a foreign brokerage said on Tuesday. Rural consumers are more impacted by price-rise than their urban counterparts, economists at HSBC said, adding it outstripped the urban segment by 1.1 percentage point in May, mainly due to higher food inflation. «The same developments, driving a K-shaped recovery, seem to be driving K-shaped inflation dynamics,» they said in a report. The report by its chief economist Pranjul Bhandari cited the ongoing heat waves, pointing out that higher food and lower core inflation are coexisting because of crop damage and livestock mortality pushing up the former.
