Michael Jackson's Neverland Ranch in Santa Barbara County comes under Wildfire threat
Santa Barbara County has charred nearly 18,000 acres since it began on July 5. Though there are worries that the fire may eventually move to more inhabited areas, it is now raging mostly in rural areas close to Los Padres National Forest, as reported by 'Fox Weather'. Conditions for fires have gotten worse due to the prolonged heat wave that is affecting the Western US and the dry weather. The area hasn't seen such extreme and protracted heat in 20 years, according to meteorologists from the National Weather Service. Although there isn't a drought in California right now, the state's parched vegetation and unrelenting heat make combating fires extremely difficult.

Universities don’t want AI research to leave them behind
Universities are in a race for relevance in the field of generative AI as private companies, loaded with talent and pricey chips, drive the conversation. Outspent by Silicon Valley, some are turning their research focus to less computing-power intensive areas of artificial intelligence, even as they seek to build additional computing resources capable of powering bigger models. “Academic institutions are scrambling to get access to compute," said Hod Lipson, chair of the mechanical engineering department at Columbia University.

Earth's inner core slows down: New research unveils 70-year cycle
Earth's inner core, a solid metal ball spinning independently within the planet, has significantly slowed down. Published in the journal Nature, these findings reveal a 70-year cycle in the core's rotational speed, providing critical insights into the complex dynamics of Earth's interior. Challenges of Studying the Inner Core Studying Earth's deep interior directly is impossible. Seismologists gather information by examining the behavior of seismic waves from large earthquakes that reach the inner core. Differences in these waves, observed at different times, allow scientists to measure changes in the core's position and calculate its spin.

Construction companies likely to report subdued growth in Q1 amid lower awarding of projects, slow execution
construction companies in the June 2024 quarter is expected to remain muted due to delay in obtaining clearances related to acquisition of land parcels, severe heat wave across various parts of the country, and slack in construction activities amid the general elections held during the quarter. Revenue of these companies is expected to grow by 2-7% year-on-year while net profit may increase by 3-10%. In the year-ago quarter, these companies had reported a strong profit growth of 33-53% while revenue had grown by 2-33%. In FY24, revenue and profit had increased in the range of 9-34% and 9-69% respectively. According to the data shared by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), the construction of national highways fell by 12% year-on-year to 1,288 km in the first two months of FY25. This fall was largely because of weak awarding of projects. Historically it has been observed that the awarding of road projects slows down when there are general elections in a fiscal. A weak order flow coupled with a slow pace of project execution will culminate into muted revenue and profit growth for the sector.
