Real Madrid adapts to Champions League needs: Shock and awe one week, armadillo defense the next
Antonio Rudiger stared down the goalkeeper, took a deep breath, and drilled home the decisive penalty, proving once again there is no tougher task in club soccer than beating Real Madrid in the Champions League. Madrid’s victory over Manchester City after a penalty shootout on Wednesday sent it to a record 17th semifinal appearance and kept it on course to add to its unequaled haul of 14 European Cups. It was fitting that Rudiger finished off City after he anchored a spirited defensive effort by Madrid that weathered wave after wave of attacks by Pep Guardiola’s side.

Lok Sabha Elections 2024 Phase One: West Bengal set for BJP Vs TMC showdown on April 19
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress (TMC) looks to set pace in the three North Bengal constituencies, BJP looks to retain their base and extend their tally of 18 seats out of the state's 42 constituencies. Notably, TMC had managed to wriggle the three constituencies out of BJP clutch for the 2021 West Bengal Assembly Elections, therefore making tomorrow's voting a litmus test for the two parties who have meticulously made their presence felt through innumerable pre-poll rallies. The issues of North Bengal identity politics and of the tea belt are expected to dominate the political discourse.

Family rival Hanuman Beniwal makes it challenging for turncoat Jyoti Mirdha
Mirdha and Hanuman Beniwal faced each other in Nagaur in 2019, but this time the contest has a twist. The plain-speaking Beniwal, president of the Rashtriya Loktantrik Party, was a part of BJP-led NDA in 2019 who defeated Congress candidate Mirdha. Beniwal, however, walked out of NDA in 2020 over the farm legislations and later vociferously opposed the Agniveer scheme. Considered close to Congress veteran Ashok Gehlot, Beniwal is now an INDIA bloc candidate fighting a tough battle. Mirdha, on the other hand, is now with BJP. Her grandfather Nathuram Mirdha was an influential Congressman who represented the seat six times and was the only MP to be elected from the party in 1977 during the Janata Party wave. Like the rest of Rajasthan, caste is the main factor. The saying goes that when two Jats clash, the community votes for the one who would be more effective in representing the community. «Every community wants their own powerful leader,» Mirdha said, brushing aside the suggestion that her gender was an issue. «Jats are a progressive community. They educate their daughters. I have never felt any less a leader because I am a woman. Also, they have known my family for generations. They know how we have worked for them.»
