No home loan or HRA? The old tax scheme may not be right for you
₹7 lakh income, ₹50,000 standard deduction for salaried individuals and lower tax rates. “The government has structured the new scheme in a way that the tax outgo is either low or at par with the old scheme unless the taxpayer is claiming substantial tax deductions and exemptions," he said. For net incomes up to ₹7.5 lakh, the new tax regime is the straightaway choice as you get the tax rebate after claiming the ₹50,000 deduction.

Could Modi 3.0 be strikingly different from Modi 2.0? Swaminathan Aiyar explains
Swaminathan Aiyar, Consulting Editor, ET Now, says “the emphasis is on more of the same. The thing is not to be different. The aim of the exercise is saying I am guaranteeing you that I have done so well for you. I am such a fantastic guy, the world looks up to me, I have improved India’s stature in the world, I have defended you against Pakistan, so I am such a great guy. I am giving you more of the same and I am giving my guarantee that I am more of the same. So, the emphasis really is more of the same, I would say, rather than saying how it is different.” Aiyar further says: “In four areas – education, employment, environment, and the police judicial system, major structural reforms are required, but they have not been attempted. And they have not been attempted because they are not easy areas to do. The attempts so far have not got very far. The BJP does not want to rock the boat at this particular point of time, even though it does have the political capital to do so. So, it is not attempting to do structural change in these four very important areas.”

Bottoming out on revenue side; running a marathon and a sprint at the same time: TCS Management
K Krithivasan, CEO & MD and NG Subramaniam, COO, TCS, in conversation with ET Now. Krithivasan says: “This quarter we started talking about both AI plus generative AI pipeline, it is about 900 million for us. The revenue numbers, once it becomes material, we would start declaring that number also. But that revenue would be not only directly what you do using generative AI. So much work needs to happen in terms of getting the data ready, in terms of cloud migration as is required. Generative AI is going to have a long tail of other kinds of related work that needs to happen. Subramaniam says: “I would agree, except that one more thing I will add is that we are growth, efficiency, innovation or AI innovation, all happening at the same place, at the same time, and in a way that we are running a marathon and a sprint at the same time.” Is growth back? K Krithivasan: We have been looking at our TCV for the last four quarters. We have been reporting very impressive TCV and we believe that with this TCV, growth has to come back. But we do not know whether it will come in Q1 or Q2. I do not want to make that call. But overall, we believe FY25 would be a better year than FY24.

Gold Prices
Gold prices rise more than 15% in last three months; what strategies should investors opt now?
Interest rates are an important factor that determine the trajectory of gold prices. When interest rates are high, gold becomes less attractive. When the US Fed hiked interest rates in 2022 and 2023, gold prices dipped (see chart). But in recent months, the US Fed has become less hawkish and more inclined to cut rates. Global gold prices have rallied on these expectations. “Gold prices could remain choppy in the months ahead as the market reacts to geopolitical developments. The medium term outlook for the precious metal is promising, given the imminent turn in the US interest rate cycle,” says Chirag Mehta, CIO, Quantum Mutual Fund. Gold has also rallied due to strong buying by central banks in the past few months. News reports say some countries are trying to reduce their US dollar reserves following the freezing of Russia’s reserves by the US and Europe, and are shifting to gold. “Increased buying of gold by central banks, especially China, in the quest to reduce dollar exposure (also called de-dollarisation), is the key reason for the spike in gold prices,” says Vidya Bala, Co-founder, PrimeInvestor.in.

How to plan your investments to achieve your short-and long-term goals
Leane should consider the returns generated by a financial product to determine its suitability for a goal. The returns from some investments, such as those tied to equity, may exhibit significant short-term fluctuations, but offer favourable returns over extended holding periods. These investments entail uncertain returns, which may vary for different periods, making them unpredictable in advance. However, they are well suited to Leane’s long-term goal of wealth accumulation, offering the potential for favourable outcomes over time. This time frame allows the balancing out of lower return periods with higher ones, enabling Leane to capitalise on superior returns generated over the longer holding period. However, if allocated to immediate goals, Leane may encounter diminished value due to potential fluctuations when funds are needed. Additionally, the volatility in returns makes these investments ill-suited to goals that require consistent and periodic returns.

'Economy's sound enough to bear short-term oil shock'
Edited excerpts: The economy has been prudently managed and is well placed cyclically, i.e. demand is picking up and there is spare capacity available to meet that demand. This means output (gross domestic product) and, consequently earnings growth, is likely to be healthy over the next 2-3 years.

IPL 2024: Rohit Sharma's fighting century in vain as CSK beat MI by 20 runs
Rohit Sharma's valiant second Indian Premier League (IPL) century went in vain as a four-wicket haul from Matheesha Pathirana managed to restrict a power-packed Mumbai Indians (MI) line-up to 186/6 in their 20 overs and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) secured a 20-run win at Wankhede Stadium on Sunday. With this win, CSK is at number three with four wins and two losses, giving them eight points. MI is at eighth spot, with two wins and four losses, giving them four points. In the run chase of 207 runs, openers Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan started really well. Slowly building from boundary each in the first two overs, the duo targetted pacers Tushar Deshpande, Shardul Thakur and Mustafizur Rahman in next three overs.

Thai ties in mind, currency deal may help popularise the Rupee
Pattaya or a spa in Bangkok? Well, that could be a reality if India can pull off a currency deal with Thailand, which has emerged as one of the preferred destinations for holidays, conferences and corporate offsites, especially since the visa relaxation last year. Now, there are early signs that the government and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) may be pondering over popularising the local unit in the South-East Asian country. The central bank recently asked banks to share their inputs and expectations on the level of transactions linked to Thailand. Authorised dealer banks issuing foreign exchange have a fair idea of travellers’ destinations, besides having latest information on international card spends and trade invoices. “They have asked for our feedback. I think there are plans of some rupee arrangement with Thailand. It’s in the early stages, as far as we can make out,” a senior banker told ET.
