Why Christy Mathai finds value in private sector banks now
Christy Mathai, Fund Manager -Equity, Quantum AMC, says what offers value to us currently is banks, especially the private sector banks where we have invested quite a bit heavily and even if there is more correction, we would love to add to some of these pockets. So, some of the consumption linked themes, be it FMCG, consumer discretionary, even with some correction we do not think they would come to our buy price in the sense if you were to look at stocks. So, even going forward, we would look to add more into some of these pockets where valuations have been reasonable, be it banks, be it consumer discretionary, especially autos. Two years back we added quite aggressively in the two-wheeler names.” Where do you stand on that argument that Indian midcap and smallcaps are way expensive right now and it is the largecap which have more value? What are your thoughts there? Christy Mathai: Clearly if you were to look at how the small and midcap index have done post COVID, it has done phenomenally well and especially last year. Last year, it was a combination of earnings growth plus the flows which came in a big way in the markets, especially in the small and midcap segment, especially the smallcaps.

Nifty & Bank Nifty in correction zone; Meghana Malkan's 2 picks
Meghana Malkan, malkansview.com, says the first pick that I will be looking at is Maruti. I like the way the pattern seems to be building up in Maruti. 11,300 seems to be a good stop for me as of now technically and I would look at a target of 12,500, so that is one pick. Second, the realty sector looks good to me. DLF seems to be a good pick from realty, Right now it seems to be at an all-time high. If I buy with a stop of 800 to 810, I would easily look at a target of Rs 900 plus if I build on the same trade advice. We are seeing markets being at a one-month low. How do we go about the markets hereon? Meghana Malkan: Broadly, I feel both the major indices, Nifty and Bank Nifty, are in a correction zone right now. The major reason being the multiple divergences on the oscillators. Volumes do not seem to be matching going along the price range. I believe there is some kind of disparity in the price volume as well. Nifty can find good support around 21,700. One could choose their strategy stock-specific or sector-specific but broader markets look to be a little in the correction zone.

Will the rise in crude oil prices impact the markets in the near term?
Also Read: Oil prices rise amid attacks on Russian energy facilities, brent crude at $86/bbl On Monday Iraq announced its intention to reduce crude exports in the coming months by over 100,000 barrels per day compared to the previous month, aiming to counter any increase above its OPEC+ quota recorded in January and February. Iraq remains committed to the voluntary cuts established with the OPEC+ coalition, which have been extended into the second quarter. On the other hand, ongoing Ukrainian drone attacks targeting Russian oil refineries are exacerbating concerns about supply stability.

Did promoter stake sales suck out Rs 40,000 cr from the market? Pankaj Pandey answers
Pankaj Pandey, Head Research, ICICIdirect.com, says there are SIP inflows of nearly Rs 19,000 odd crore on a monthly basis. On top of it, there are about Rs 3,000 to 4,000 odd crore of inflows from the ETF perspective. Overall, the domestic liquidity is still quite good and that is where even if there is a bit of a selling there, that is not going to change the market trajectory overall. FPI inflows come and go and which is what we have seen last year also. We had some interesting data that we were culling out talking about the kind of promoter stakes sales that we have witnessed in the last month or so of Rs 43,000 crore. How are you reading into this? MNCs as well as ITC, IndiGo, TCS, etc, are in that list? Pankaj Pandey: From FPI perspective, we have seen inflows of about Rs 40,000 odd crore. But our sense is that most are stock specific cases. For example, in IndiGo, one promoter has been continuously paring down his stake. Whereas in the case of ITC, nothing changes structurally because of the high amount of debt and so a stake sale does not really change the overall texture of the company's growth.

Want your portfolio to do well? Pick from these 6 large and midcap bank stocks: Sanjiv Bhasin
Sanjiv Bhasin, Director, IIFL Securities, says in power, “we would place our bets on NTPC, but REC, PFC would be our two top picks. We think this quarter’s results will be the best ever in the history of the company and like I said, diversification across the board in all power verticals is seeing very good upside on revenues and net interest income and margins.” Bhasin further says is very bullish on ICICI, Axis, HDFC and Kotak and thinks Federal Bank will be a key beneficiary of expansion of gold loans. Also, RBL Bank is giving a very good opportunity. Your portfolio should do well if it contains 4-5 of these large and midcap stocks.

In 2024, there will be more funding for startups than last year: Sanjeev Bikhchandani
Sanjeev Bikhchandani, Co-Founder, Info Edge, talking to ET Now at the sidelines of startup mahakumbh says: “McKinsey in collaboration with CII released a report about which there was a discussion here also, which is called Unicorn 2.0 and that report said that in the last 10 years, roughly 13% to 15% of India's GDP growth has come from the startup ecosystem. In my view, that is a conservative estimate and this number is likely to go up as we go along”.

Where to do bottom fishing in this volatile market? Gurmeet Chadha answers
Gurmeet Chadha, Managing Partner, Complete Circle Consultants, says “you can do some bit of bottom fishing in the mid and smallcaps space in railway, defence stocks and some of the auto ancillary stocks. There have been very good corrections there but be a little more patient. It may not just come up the way you are used to seeing it last year.” Let us talk about chemicals. Do you think now these chemical stocks, the sector as a whole, could see a turnaround coming in in a slow and steady way? Gurmeet Chadha: Business performance wise, you probably will have another quarter or two. I think most of the inventory destocking has happened. It is a very cyclical sector for most chemicals except for a few certain chemistries and there is the factor of China dumping. I think in a few spaces you will find government intervention as well. But I also think that the bad news is in the price in most such names. We saw Aarti moving up when post earnings came in last month in February. One has to be selective here. You can also look at agrochemicals with now election season coming. So, we are looking at something like Tata Chemicals.
