Vinesh Phogat disqualification: After star Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat was disqualified from the Olympics just ahead of the gold medal match, India's sports minister Mansukh Mandaviya apprised Lok Sabha of the incident on August 7. Vinesh was disqualifed for being overweight even as she was in the final stages of preparation for her title bout. The wrestler was found to be overweight by 100 grams, Mandaviya said.

Reliance retail opened 1,840 new stores in FY24 even as it signed a host of deals with global companies, the conglomerate revealed in its annual report on Wednesday. The retail business of the oil-to-retail conglomerate registered an EBITDA of Rs 23,802, in FY24, recording a growth of 28.4% YoY. «The registered customer base crossed a milestone of 300 million, making Reliance Retail one of the most preferred retailers in the country,» the annual report stated. Further, the conglomerate said that the Retail division is set to broaden its offerings.

CBI conducted searches at 15 locations in Chhattisgarh in connection with allegations of nepotism in the public service commission examination held in 2022, officials said on Wednesday. «Ineligible» family members of politicians, PSC officials and public servants were recruited in lucrative government jobs, they said. The searches took place at six locations in Raipur, three in Durg, two each in Mahasamund and Dhamtari and one each in Sarguja and Bilaspur at premises connected to those who benefited from the nepotism, they said. The CBI has named 16 such candidates who were appointed as deputy collectors, deputy superintendents of police and other lucrative positions, they said. The agency searched premises of 15 of them on Wednesday while the residence on one candidate was searched earlier, they said.

The launches are expected to rise 12% on-year to 767 million sq ft in the current financial year, on an aggregate basis across the top seven cities, supported by decadal low inventory, comfortable years-to-sell (YTS, calculated as unsold inventory/sales in last 12 months) and healthy demand.

Odisha since August 6 with over 100 mm of rainfall recorded in at least 25 places, the IMD said on Wednesday. According to a report of India Meteorological Department's (IMD) Bhubaneswar centre, Banki in Cuttack district and Bhapur in Nayagarh district witnessed heavy rainfall of 317 mm and 210 mm, respectively, during the last 24 hours till 8.30 am on Wednesday. Similarly, 17 places including Begunia and Bolagarh in Khurda district, Hindol in Dhenkanal, Binika and Birmaharajpur in Sonepur, Dabugaon and Tentulikhunti in Nabarangpur and Dharamgarh, Kesingha and Barla in Kalahandi district have recorded rainfall ranging from 121 to 196 mm during the period, the weather office said.

Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday called on the government to declare the recent calamity in Kerala's Wayanad a national disaster. Because of the court's mercy he is outside and not in jail. One cannot get bail in such cases,» Siddaramaiah said. Addressing reporters here, he said, «What moral right does Yediyurappa have?
