Air Force has given clearance to public sector firm Bharat Dynamics Limited for the production of 200 Astra Mark 1 air-to-air missiles. The Astra Mark1 missiles have been developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation with BDL as its production agency. The production clearance to the BDL was given during a visit by the Indian Air Force Deputy Chief Air Marshal Ashutosh Dixit to Hyderabad recently, Indian Air Force officials said.

Chief of Defence Staff Gen Anil Chauhan and senior military officials are likely to hold wide-ranging deliberations on Monday on the government's plan to bring greater synergy among the Armed Forces in the area of financial planning in line with ensuring tri-services jointness. Gen Chauhan is set to elaborate on the plans while chairing an apex conference on financial synergy and cohesion in the Army, the Navy and the Air Force, officials said on Sunday. The deliberations on ensuring synergy among the Armed Forces on financial planning are taking place amid the government's ambitious plans to roll out theatre commands. Under the theaterisation model, the government seeks to integrate the capabilities of the Army, the Air Force and the Navy and optimally utilise their resources for wars and operations.

Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday said his government will soon introduce a law for life imprisonment in cases of 'love jihad'. Speaking at the state BJP executive meet here, he said, «We spoke about 'love jihad' during the elections. Soon, we will bring a law, which will award life imprisonment in such cases.» Sarma also said a new domicile policy will be introduced soon, under which only those born in Assam will be eligible for state government jobs. He maintained that indigenous people have received priority in the «one lakh government jobs» provided as per a pre-poll promise, which will be evident when the complete list is published.

Ukraine on Sunday announced the mandatory evacuation of children and their guardians from areas in the Donetsk region, where Russia has been claiming advances. Just hours earlier, Russia said its forces had seized a nearby village, after claiming a string of villages in recent weeks — many just consisting of a few streets. «The enemy is bombing the towns and villages of these communities every day, so it was decided to evacuate children with their parents or other legal representatives,» Donetsk governor Vadym Filashkin said, listing the towns and villages to be evacuated.

Centre is planning to amend the Waqf Board Act, AIMIM Chief Asaduddin Owaisi said on Sunday that it shows that the Modi government wants to snatch away the autonomy of the board and intends to interfere in it. Addressing a conference, Owaisi said, «Firstly, when Parliament is in session, the central government is acting against parliamentary supremacy and privileges and informing the media and not informing Parliament. I can say that whatever has been written in the media about this proposed amendment shows that the Modi government wants to take away the autonomy of the Waqf Board and it wants to interfere. This itself is against the freedom of religion.» The Hyderabad MP also alleged that the BJP has been against these boards and Waqf properties from the very beginning and they have been working on a «Hindutva agenda».

Anupriya Patel on Sunday reiterated her demand of implementing reservation in fourth-class jobs in the private sector. «Reservation is not followed in appointments done in fourth-class posts via outsourcing in the private sector. The people of deprived sections used to get fourth-class jobs. When recruitment on these posts are done through outsourcing, no reservation law is followed,» Patel said while talking to reporters. «Our party wants reservation should be followed in all the appointments in fourth-class jobs through outsourcing in the private sector,» she said. Amara Raja Energy & Mobility (ARE&M) has posted about 26 per cent rise in consolidated net profit at Rs 249.12 crore for June quarter FY25. It had reported a net profit of Rs 198.31 crore for April-June period of 2023-24, the company said in an exchange filing on Saturday. Revenue from operations rose to Rs 3,263.05 crore from Rs 2,796.27 crore in the year-ago quarter.

Madhya Pradesh resulted in the deaths of nine children who were buried under the debris of a collapsed wall on Sunday. Several other children sustained injuries and are currently receiving medical treatment. The incident took place during a religious programme in Shahpur village under Rehli assembly seat. Nine children, aged 10 to 15 years, were killed in the wall collapse incident at the religious programme in Shahpur, Sagar Divisional Commissioner Virendra Singh Rawat told PTI over phone.

BJP on Sunday responded to demands from various quarters, including Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, to declare the devastating Wayanad landslides a national disaster, saying that such a concept doesn't exist under Central government guidelines, a policy unchanged since the UPA government's tenure. Senior party leader V Muraleedharan posted on his Facebook page a 2013 Parliament document in which then Minister of State for Home, Mullappally Ramachandran, stated that «there is no provision to declare a natural disaster as a national disaster.» «The concept of a 'national disaster' does not exist under the Central government's guidelines, a fact that has been the case since the UPA government's tenure. This was explicitly stated by the then Union Home Minister, Mullappally Ramachandran, in a response to a question in the Lok Sabha on August 6, 2013,» said Muraleedharan, who is also a former Union Minister. «While there is no official designation of 'national disaster', each disaster is addressed according to its severity,» he said, «and urged people not to attempt to create baseless controversies during this time of disaster.»

France on Sunday called on its citizens in Lebanon to leave the country «as soon as possible» amid fears of all-out war between Israel and Hezbollah and a broader regional conflict. «In a highly volatile security context, we once again call the attention of French nationals, particularly those passing through, to the fact that direct commercial flights and ones with stopovers to France are still available, and we invite them to make their arrangements now to leave Lebanon as soon as possible,» the foreign ministry said in its travel advice notice for Lebanon.

Suresh Gopi on Sunday said that the Centre will examine the legality behind the demand from various quarters to classify as a national disaster the landslides that hit this north Kerala district and killed hundreds. Gopi, who is Union Minister of State for Tourism, Petroleum and Natural Gas, said that the Central government will «examine its legal aspects» after carrying out an evaluation of the landslides which wiped away hundreds of homes in Mundakkai and Chooralmala areas of the district. «The impact has to be studied,» he said. The Union MoS was speaking to reporters after arriving in Wayanad to visit the landslides-hit areas where he interacted with the rescue personnel on various aspects of the ongoing search operations.
