Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio are likely to collectively buy another $2 billion worth of fresh 5G network gear to expand and bolster their next-gen mobile broadband coverage for a rapidly growing user base amid rising shipments of smartphones supporting next gen technology, people aware of the matter said. Sunil Mittal-led Airtel has floated a fresh request for proposal (RFP) to kickstart its second round of 5G gear purchases, while Mukesh Ambani-owned Jio too is in discussions with global vendors, the people cited said. «Airtel's RFP is under evaluation at the 5G vendors' end. Ericsson and Nokia will likely be the principal OEMs handling bulk of Airtel and Jio's fresh 5G base station (BTS) needs with a small chunk of the expansion deals likely going to Samsung,» one of the sources told ET.

BSF DG, special DG's tenure cut short; repatriated to state cadres
BSF Director General (DG) Nitin Agrawal and his deputy Special DG (West) Y B Khurania, sending them back to their respective state cadres with immediate effect, according to a government order. Agrawal is a 1989-batch Kerala cadre officer, while Khurania belongs to the 1990-batch of the Odisha cadre. Agrawal had taken charge as the Border Security Force chief in June last year. Khurania, as the special DG (West), was heading the formation of the force along the Pakistan border. Separate orders issued by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) conveyed they were being «prematurely» repatriated with «immediate effect.»

LIC Housing Q1 Results: Profit falls 2% to Rs 1,300 crore
LIC Housing Finance on Friday reported a 2 per cent decline in its profit to Rs 1,300 crore for the first quarter ended June 30. LIC-promoted housing finance company had reported a profit of Rs 1,324 crore in the year-ago period. The total income increased to Rs 6,784 crore during the quarter against Rs 6,747 crore in the same period last year, LIC Housing Finance said in a regulatory filing.

SC asks UPSC to conduct fresh medical test of candidate discarded in 2014 on grounds of obesity
civil services exam but was declared «temporarily unfit» to be a civil servant due to obesity, the Supreme Court came to his rescue on Friday by ordering the UPSC to conduct his medical examination afresh. The top court used its special powers under Article 142 of the Constitution, directing the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) to conduct a fresh physical fitness test for Rakshit Shivam Prakash, who ranked 93 in the civil services exam held in 2014 but lost out due to «unacceptable» Body Mass Index (BMI). The BMI of the candidate was at 31.75, which is higher than the prescribed standard of 30. He was declared «temporarily unfit» and consequently, denied employment. He could not take part in the second medical test scheduled on July 14, 2015. Article 142 of the Constitution empowers the top court to pass «any decree or order necessary for doing complete justice in any case or matter pending before it».

Citigroup Global Markets Mauritius, ICICI Prudential MF and Societe Generale, on Friday acquired stakes in Netweb Technologies India for Rs 458 crore through open market transactions. As per the data available on NSE, Citigroup Global Markets Mauritius, Discovery Global Opportunity Mauritius, ICICI Prudential Mutual Fund, Invesco MF, Societe Generale and Union MF bought a total of 20,54,795 shares or 3.64 per cent stake in Netweb Technologies India. Shares were picked up at an average price of Rs 2,232.10 apiece, taking the combined deal value to Rs 458.65 crore.

CAMS Q1 Results: PAT soars 42% YoY to Rs 108 crore
agent for mutual funds CAMS on Friday reported 42 per cent jump in profit after tax (PAT) at Rs 108.21 crore for the three months ended June 2024. The company had logged a PAT of Rs 76.34 crore in the year-ago period, Computer Age Management Services Ltd (CAMS) said in a statement. Revenue surged 27 per cent to Rs 331.40 crore in April-June FY25 from Rs 261.3 crore in the year-ago period.

Eris Lifesciences Q1 Results: Net dips 4.5% YoY at Rs 89 crore
Eris Lifesciences on Friday said its consolidated profit after tax declined by 4.5 per cent year on year to Rs 89 crore for the quarter ended on June 30, 2024. The drug maker had reported a profit after tax of Rs 94 crore in the April-June quarter of the last fiscal. Revenue rose to Rs 720 crore for the first quarter of 2024-25 from Rs 467 crore in the year-ago period, Eris Lifesciences said in a statement.

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh on Friday submitted a notice to move a privilege motion against Union Home Minister Amit Shah, alleging that he «misled» the Rajya Sabha by his emphatic statements on early warnings issued by the Centre to the Kerala government ahead of the Wayanad landslides «which have been proven to be false». Ramesh, who is the Congress' chief whip in the Rajya Sabha, said in his letter to Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar that in his response to a Calling Attention on the Wayanad landslides in the Rajya Sabha on July 31, 2024, the home minister made several claims on early warning systems and how they were not utilized by the Kerala government inspite of alerts issued by the Union government well ahead of the tragedy. «These claims have been extensively fact-checked in the media. One such detailed fact-check published in The Hindu dated August 2, 2024 is attached,» Ramesh said in his letter, which was also signed by Congress' deputy leader in the House Pramod Tiwari and senior leader Digvijaya Singh.

Tamilnad Mercantile Bank reports a 10% rise in net profit for June quarter
Tamilnad Mercantile Bank reported a 10% rise in net profit for the June quarter at Rs 287 crore against Rs 261 crore in the year ago period even as it has increased provisions and contingencies. The operating profit stood 23.4% higher at Rs 469 crore against 380 crore, supported by a 40% rise in non-interest income while net interest income was lower for the quarter at Rs 466 crore against Rs 514 crore in the year ago period. The bank's net interest income for the quarter was however higher at 4.12% against 4% earlier. Provisions and contingencies stood higher at Rs 85 crore against Rs 39 crore even as gross non-performing assets fell to 1.44% at the end of June against 1.56% a year back.

Govt assures to look into demand for higher pension, says pensioners body EPS-95 NAC
government has assured to look into the demands of 78 lakh pensioners seeking a minimum monthly pension of Rs 7,500, the EPS-95 National Agitation Committee (NAC) said on Friday. In a statement, the pensioners' body said that Union Minister for Labour and Employment Mansukh Mandaviya met with its representatives and assured them that the government would take necessary steps to address their demand. The meeting took place following a protest organised by members of the EPS-95 National Agitation Committee in the national capital on Wednesday. The members coming from various locations of the country have protested against the government here and demanded a higher pension instead of an average monthly pension of only Rs 1,450, the body said adding that there are around 3.6 million pensioners who are getting even less than Rs 1,000 as pension per month.

Telangana needs to repay borrowings of Rs 2.86 lakh crore in 10 years, says CAG
Telangana government is obligated to repay over Rs 2.67 lakh crore loans borrowed from the market, both principal and interest by FY33, even as the Gross State Domestic Product (at current prices) grew at an average growth rate of 15.09 per cent from Rs 8.60 lakh crore in 2018-19 to Rs 13.13 lakh crore in 2022-23, said CAG report on Friday. According to the report (for 2022-23) by Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) which was placed in the state legislature, besides market borrowings, the state government will also have a liability to repay Rs 19,210 crore as principal in the next nine years in respect of borrowings taken from some financial institutions such as National Small Saving Fund and LIC. «As can be seen from the above table, the state government will have to repay Rs 2,67,018 crore as principal and interest on the market borrowings in the next ten years by 2032-33,» the auditor said.
