The amendment, coming in the wake of Kallakurichi hooch tragedy, substantially enhances the term of imprisonment and quantum of fine for various offences under sections 4,5,6,7 and 11 of the Act.

Concorde, a Bengaluru-based real estate developer has acquired a 1.6-acre land parcel located on Sarjapur Road, Bengaluru. Set to be a premium residential complex, this joint development will have a gross development value (GDV) of Rs 200 crore. In March, Concorde acquired a 4.5 acre land in Thanisandra, Bengaluru. Titan Company on Saturday said it is launching its jewellery brand Tanishq in Bangladesh as part of expansion plans in the international market. On Friday, the Tata Group-managed firm signed a JV agreement to this effect with Rhythm Group which will make Tanishq available across the Bangladesh market, according to a joint statement. The joint venture will commence with the opening of the manufacturing facility in Narayanganj, in Bangladesh, it added. Besides the domestic market, Titan is expanding Tanishq's presence in the international market and operates 17 stores across the UAE, US, Qatar, Singapore and Oman.

government panel on Saturday recommended Challa Sreenivasulu Setty's name for the position of chairman of the State Bank of India (SBI), after meeting with three candidates for the post. «Financial Services Institutions Bureau interfaced with 3 candidates on June 29, 2024 for the position of Chairman in State Bank of India,» the panel said in a release. The Bureau added that taking performance and experience into consideration, Setty was their choice for the job.

Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, expressing concerns over the extension of the Interest Equalisation Scheme (IES) for only two months and exclusively for MSMEs. Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO) president Ashwani Kumar highlighted that the scheme has so far benefitted not only MSMEs but also merchant exporters and large manufacturing companies at a lower rate of two per cent for 410 tariff lines, covering labour-intensive products. The current scheme, valid till June, provides pre and post-shipment rupee export credit, offers a two per cent interest equalisation rate for manufacturers and merchant exporters dealing with specified 410 export items, and a higher rate of three per cent for MSME manufacturers exporting under any of these items.

Laxmi Nagar area, thieves stole a car with its owner's two children — aged two and eleven years old — inside, later demanding a ransom of Rs 50 lakh. The incident occurred on Friday night when the parents left their children in the running vehicle while they went into a nearby confectionery shop, police said on Saturday. According to officials, the incident occurred at around 11.40 pm when a couple went to a confectionery shop on Laxmi Nagar Vikas Marg and left their two children in the car parked outside the shop. The couple left the vehicle running with the AC on for the kids while they went inside to buy sweets. During this time, a suspect opened the vehicle's door and drove away with the children inside. «The parents had briefly gone inside Heera Sweets to buy sweets when the car was stolen. When they came back, their vehicle and children were missing. Later, they approached the police and lodged a complaint,» officials said.

Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren on Saturday slammed the BJP for allegedly hatching a conspiracy against him and claimed that the saffron party will be wiped out from the state after the upcoming assembly elections. Arunachal Pradesh districts was snapped following landslides triggered by incessant rain, officials said on Saturday. A key stretch from Aalo in West Siang district to Mechukha in Shi-Yomi district was damaged in between Roing and Pene villages due to the continuous downpour, they said. Shi-Yomi District Information and Public Relations Officer (DIPRO) Jumi Ete said landslides have been reported at various locations in the area. The Aalo-Mechuka road is strategically important for Army personnel deployed in Shi-Yomi district, she said.

Vedanta Resources Ltd. can take back control of the Konkola copper project in Zambia after a court sanctioned a plan to settle debts owed to the mine’s creditors. A court in Zambia’s capital, Lusaka, on Friday approved a scheme of arrangement that was supported by Konkola Copper Mines Plc’s creditors, the southern African country’s mines minister, Paul Kabuswe, said on Facebook. Billionaire Anil Agarwal’s Vedanta has been trying to regain the major copper asset since 2019, when KCM was put into provisional liquidation after the previous government accused its owner of lying about expansion plans and paying too little tax. To get access to the mine again, Vedanta now needs to follow the court ruling by releasing $250 million to settle debts that KCM owes to contractors and suppliers. Vedanta told Bloomberg this week that it stands ready to start making the payments. Agarwal’s firm has also committed to investing $1 billion over five years to complete expansion projects.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Saturday announced 'Mukhyamantri Teerth Darshan Yojana', a pilgrimage scheme for senior citizens from all religions. The scheme will help elderly people who are unable to visit the pilgrimage sites on their own, he said. Shinde made the announcement in the state legislative assembly while replying to a calling attention notice by Shiv Sena MLA Pratap Sarnaik. «The scheme titled 'Mukhyamantri Teerth Darshan Yojana' will be for the senior citizens of all religions,» the chief minister said. Rules will be framed for the scheme and the government will facilitate the pilgrimage of senior citizens from all religions who are unable to do it on their own, he said.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday arrested the principal and the vice-principal of a school in Jharkhand's Hazaribagh and a journalist of a Hindi newspaper in connection with the National-Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test — Undergraduate (NEET-UG) paper leak, officials had said. Ehsanul Haque, the principal of Oasis School, was made the city coordinator of Hazaribagh for the medical entrance exam conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) on May 5, they said.
