Mumbai bench of Income Tax Appellate Tribunal has allowed ICICI Bank Ltd to avail ₹1,855 crore bad debt write-off as deduction, but dismissed the private bank's appeal seeking ₹502-crore worth long-term capital loss allowance. The appellate tribunal was hearing ICICI Bank's appeal against an order of principal commissioner of Income tax (PCIT) for 2015-16. The PCIT had ruled that an allowance of long-term capital loss of ₹996 crore was irregular and that the bank had claimed an excess capital loss of ₹502 crore. The bank had calculated capital gain and capital loss while acquiring and selling shares, applying the cost of inflation index on foreign currency rather than Indian currency, it said. The ITAT bench of Sandeep Singh Karhail and Prashant Maharishi upheld the order of PCIT and observed that ICICI Bank transacted in Indian currency and, therefore, it could not have indexed the cost of inflation on foreign currency.

Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terror module was busted on Sunday in Jammu and Kashmir's Kulgam district with the arrest of four militant associates, police said. Security forces arrested four terrorist associates and recovered arms and ammunition from their possession in the south Kashmir district, a police spokesman said. The arrests were made in connection with case FIR no. 14/2024 registered under various sections of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. The spokesman identified the arrested as Zahoor Ahmad Pandit, Basir Hussain Pandit, Imtiyaz Gull, and Gulzar Ahmad Khar, all residents of Wanpora.

BRS leader K Kavitha has asked the CBI to withdraw the notice issued to her under Section 41-A of CrPC summoning her for questioning in connection with the Delhi excise policy scam case. She was asked to appear before the investigation team at the CBI headquarters here on Monday. In a letter to the CBI, the daughter of former Telangana chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao said the notice to appear at the probe agency's headquarters should be put in abeyance in the light of her pressing onerous engagements coupled with the necessity of her personal presence in the state while the parliamentary elections are underway. «I may request you to firstly revoke or withdraw the subject notice as it appears to be sent by invoking Section 41A CrPC while not being aware or conscious of the earlier notice sent under Section 160 CrPC,» she said.

India will add 18 more nuclear power reactors with a cumulative capacity to generate 13,800 MWe of electricity, taking the total share of atomic power in the energy mix to 22,480 MWe by 2031-32. This was announced by the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) after Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated two home-built 700 MW nuclear power reactors at Kakrapar in Gujarat last week. HDFC Bank received approval from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to sell its 90% stake in the education loan company HDFC Credila Financial Services Ltd- a move that will boost private lender’s income in the fourth quarter. HDFC, the erstwhile term lending institution, had executed a definitive agreement to divest 90% of its stake in HDFC Credila subject to approval from the regulator, a stock exchange notice on June 19 said. On July 1, last year, HDFC Ltd, the parent housing finance company, was amalgamated with HDFC Bank. Thus, the entire investment was transferred from the parent to the bank.
