Bengal's North 24 Parganas district, where local women held protests demanding the arrest of absconding TMC leader Sheikh Shajahan and his aides, police said on Saturday. Local women with sticks and brooms in their hands took out processions in different areas of Sandeshkhali as the protests intensified on the second day on Friday. «Section 144 of CrPC has been imposed and internet services have been suspended in parts of North 24 Parganas district,» a senior police officer said. Shajahan has been absconding since last month after a team of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) that went to raid his house in an alleged ration scam was attacked by a mob.

Wankhede, a 2008-batch Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer of the Customs and Indirect Taxes cadre, has moved the Bombay High Court seeking protection from any coercive action by the anti-money laundering agency.

National Investigation Agency (NIA) conducted multiple raids in Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday as part of its crackdown against elements allegedly involved in terror funding and radicalisation of youngsters, officials said. The raids are underway at different places, including Gujjar Nagar and Shaheedi Chowk in Jammu city, they added. The officials said a private school and premises linked to three of its functionaries, including the house of the chairman, were raided by the NIA sleuths. The residences of two former leaders of banned outfit Jamaat-e-Islami Jammu and Kashmir were searched in Kulgam district, the officials said.

Manipur government on Friday approved to increase the allowance of Manipur Police Commandos and other state forces in vulnerable areas. The new session of the Manipur assembly will commence from February 28, the government said. Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh announced the same on X, “The state Cabinet approved to increase the allowance for our brave Manipur Police Commando and other state forces in vulnerable areas. Effective immediately, the allowance for Manipur Police Commando will be increased by Rs 5,000, while the state forces in vulnerable areas will receive an increment of Rs 3,000.” The cabinet meeting held on Friday also addressed the issue of providing ex-gratia to victims of violence, particularly focusing on individuals from central armed forces but who are not residing in the state. A new scheme was discussed to extend support to such individuals.

Honolulu: The US Geological Survey said Friday that a magnitude 5.7 earthquake struck just south of the Big Island of Hawaii. The earthquake, which the USGS initially reported as magnitude 6.3 before downgrading it, was centered 11 miles (18 kilometers) south of Naalehu, Hawaii, at a depth of 6 miles (10 kilometers). The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said no tsunami was expected. Some shaking could be felt in Honolulu on the island of Oahu which is about 200 miles (322 kilometers) to the north.

He also said the Standing Committee of National Board for Wild Life (SCNBWL) recommended a total of 689 proposals in the last five years. The minister said the environment ministry approved 43 of the total 53 proposals received in the last five years for «projects/activities» in the default eco-sensitive zones (ESZs) according to the provisions of the Environment Impact Assessment Notification, 2006. ESZs are eco-fragile areas within 10 kilometers of the borders of protected areas, including national parks and wildlife sanctuaries.
