Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) on Tuesday said container traffic at its port rose 11.86 per cent year-on-year to 6,14,651 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) in October. The port had handled a total of 5,49,487 TEUs of containers in October last year, it added. In the previous month, it handled 7.62 million tonnes of total cargo, 2.26 per cent more compared to the total cargo handled in October 2023. In October 2024, the port said, it handled 562 container rakes and 88,224 TEUs compared to 555 rakes and 88,412 TEUs in the year-ago period.

Commercial vehicle maker and Hinduja Group flagship firm Ashok Leyland on Monday said its total vehicle sales declined 9 per cent to 15,310 units in October. It had sold a total of 16,864 vehicles in the year-ago period. Total medium and heavy commercial vehicle (M&HCV) sales, including exports, in the previous month stood at 9,408 vehicles, a drop of 8 per cent over 10,185 M&HCVs sold in the corresponding month of last year, the company said. The total light commercial vehicle sales (domestic plus exports) during the reported period also fell 12 per cent year-on-year to 5,902 units.

Odisha government has sought help from the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to repair multiple cracks that have developed in the Meghanada Pacheri, the boundary wall of Jagannath Temple in Puri. Temple servitors have raised concerns that wastewater from Anandabazar within the temple complex is seeping through these cracks. They also claimed that patches of algae have appeared on certain sections of the wall. Worried about the safety of the 12th-century shrine, the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) has urged the ASI to undertake necessary conservation work on the wall. «We are concerned about the safety of the Meghanada Pacheri. ASI officials and our technical team have already inspected the boundary wall, and we hope that ASI will soon carry out the required repairs,» SJTA chief administrator Arabinda Padhee said on Sunday.
