Based on Liu Cixin's book of the same name, the Netflix series opens with a young Ye Wenjie watching her astrophysicist father being beaten to death during the Chinese Cultural Revolution. Wenjie works on a remote military base on a top-secret project and contacts an alien group, the San-Ti. Many scientists including Ye Wenjie's daughter Vera (Vedette Lim), commit suicide under mysterious circumstances. Vera's research assistant, Saul, is part of the so-called Oxford Five.
