ministry of electronics and information technology (MeitY) has got a 48% boost in the budget to over Rs 26,000 crore, much of which will be ploughed into the IndiaAI Mission and expanded production-linked incentive (PLI) schemes for semiconductors, large-scale electronics and IT hardware. The estimate for the “modified scheme for setting up of compound semiconductors/silicon photonics/sensors fab/discrete semiconductors fab and semiconductor assembly, testing, marking and packaging (ATMP)/outsourced semiconductor assembly and test (OSAT) facilities in India” was increased from Rs 2,500 crore in the revised estimate for FY25 to Rs 3,900 crore in FY26.

The central government increased the estimate for the “modified scheme for setting up of semiconductor fabs in India” from Rs 1,200 crore in the revised estimate for FY25 to Rs 2,499.9 crore in FY26. MeitY allocated Rs 2,000 crore to the IndiaAI Mission for FY25, up almost 11 times from the revised budget estimated of Rs 173 crore for FY25. In the July budget for FY25, the IndiaAI Mission was allocated Rs 551.75 crore, 68.6% more than the revised estimate for FY25.
The Centre had approved Rs 10,371.9 crore in March last year for the IndiaAI Mission, of which 44%, or Rs 4,563.4 crore, is earmarked for providing compute capacity of more than 10,000 graphics processing units (GPUs) over a period of five years.
